I'm trying to find the birth and any censuses prior to 1881 for James.

on 1st August 1876 James married Ruth Catherine Griffiths in Knighton, Radnorshire.

James says his father was William Lloyd a farmer.

Here goes. My brain is a bit like mush today, so forgive spelling mistakes.

1861 they are at Cwmllechwedd, at 'Ligo' - father William a farmer of sixty acres, born Llanbister. Mum Elizabeth born Llanbadarn Fynydd. Both Radnorshire, of course.
Three brothers for James - there's also a nursing child and a servant in the household.

In 1871, William and Elizabeth are at Fountain Head, Llangynllo, with son William... James not there.

Ah, James Lloyd in the 1851 Census, age 1, Pennant, Radnorshire. Place of birth given as Beguildy, Radnorshire.

Also, James baptised at Beguildy, 7 Sep 1849. Address given as 'Pennant'.

Possibly this is him.

GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 26 Page 249

Mother's maiden name JONES.

This of course throws out the death in Sheffield, so maybe I have led you down the wrong path. Apologies if so! Give me your thoughts, Chimp.

Not sure this is the right chap now, so reluctant to go much further with him. James is at Llanfair Waterdine in 1871, a servant, but I expect that you have seen and discounted this many times over, Chimp.

I think the family you are looking for in 1851 (WIlliam, Eizabeth, Edward, Ann and William) are in Obendry Clun in 1851 - right for a birth for James in 1855c
For some reason William snr is missing on the FMP transcription) HO107/1983/112/7 - he is on the original

I think the 1861 census you found is a real possibility.

The 1851 census in #3 wouldn't fit as this james was born 1850'ish My James was born 1855

Certainly looks like the same family @Bay Horse found on the 1861 census.

Just checking - in 1871 there is a William Lloyd widower a farmer of 20 acres - RG10/5598/45/4
If this is the William with Elizabeth and children in 1861, it could explain why all the children are working and scattered far and wide.

I did see one of the witnesses on James m/c is Thomas Lloyd - the younger brother perhaps?

Obendry Clun in 1851
I have never heard of this place but looking at the following page on the census there are several places called 'Pentry' in the Obendry area. I think that whomever filled in the census wasn't au fait with how it is spelled. It should be Pentre. This is quite close to Chapel Lawn where James says he was born on the 1901 census

Found him Kelly’s Directory, not sure what year though, quick Google of his name. Living Sidney House, Priory Hill, Milford Haven and as an agent for London and North Western Railway office, The Docks, Milford Haven occupation, agent. That him?

There is a birth registration at Clun reg district in the March qtr 1855 for a James S LLOYD, mother's maiden name PRICE - could this be a candidate for your James?? As Bayhorse has said, William & wife Elizabeth (nee PRICE??) are in the 1861 census of Cwmllechwedd, brother William also being born in Clun. However, the birth registration of a William LLOYD at Clun reg district in the June qtr 1850 shows his mother's maiden name as MORRIS.

Janet

Brother Thomas LLOYD's birth registration in the June qtr 1857 at Knighton reg district gives his mother's maiden name of PRICE also, so was William LLOYD perhaps married twice?
I don't think so, first child Edward was also reg with mmn Price

Plus this marriage - Mar qtr 1845 William Lloyd to Elizabeth Price - Knighton 26 - 283

Not too sure if this marriage refers to your William LLOYD, but there is one at Vowchurch, Herefordshire on 8 November 1838 between a William LLOYD and an Elizabeth PRICE Edit - well found MM and I like the marriage in 1845 much better too!!

This may not be the right man as there is a burial for William Lloyd age 49 - 17/7/1869 at Beguildy
reg. - Knighton 11b107 Sept qtr
