John and Grace Hollingshead

John Hollingshead and his family emigrated from the Spitalfields area in London to Colonial America in 1678. There are a number of US Family History sources available on Ancestry about this family and their descendants, but these and other sources including Quaker records do not confirm his wife Grace’s maiden name. However, most trees have her named as Grace Scott. John was supposedly born about 1645 in St Clements parish and Grace about 1648. Presumably they were married before 1669 as most trees have some children born in that year and there is at least one baptism record for a son John in June 1669 at Saint Botolph Aldgate. Whereas other sources say he was born in 1673 including the one in the attached print screen.
The lack of reliable sources is somewhat exasperating. Can anyone advise whether Parish records close to where they lived might be available for the years concerned. Determining Grace’s maiden name and their marriage record is the primary goal for a number of us involved in researching this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Esther

This might help with the baptisms in London before they emigrated
If you have access to FMP they have the England & Wales Society of Friends (Quaker) Births 1578-1841
In the Devonshire House, Houndsditch register there are 3 boys with entries (giving John's occupation as silk stocking weaver and the family's address)
John 1873, Hugh 1875, Charles 1877
(I haven't looked for the burials yet - got to go out)

Further to what MM found for you, Ancestry also have the baptisms and there is a burial record for Hugh HOLLINSHEAD son of John HOLLINGSHEAD of Stepney parish on 28th day of the 4th month 1677, aged 18 months, who died of the meezles and was buried in Checker Alley burial ground. Also a burial for a child of John HOLLINGSHEAD of Bednall Green in the parish of Stepney, Silk Stocken Framework Knitter, died 15th of the 5th month 1678, aged 1 day, and was buried in the Checker Alley burial ground. Not that I have managed to find a marriage for John & Grace so far .......

The only marriage I can find (and I guess you must have also seen it) is -
16/10/1669 St James, Duke's Place, John Hollingshead to Anne Clemson - the orignal is on Anc and it clearly shows her name as Anne
In my searching it seems that Quakers use a naming pattern for their children, so it might be worth condsidering the names Hugh and Charles could be significant in either Grace or John's family, should you find any likley baptisms for them.

Molly and Janet,

Thank you both for looking into the baptisms and burials of the children, I had found some of these sources. I also note that many trees have a June 1669 baptism for a John Hollingshead applied to William, who at least one US family history source says was born before 1673. And some trees have the baptism applied to an Anthony that the US family history sources do not mention at all.

I can only think that this 1669 John died before a second son named John was born in 1673, the alternative being that he belongs to another couple.

I had not seen the marriage to Anne Clemson that Molly found, in fact I have not found any marriages at all. Also I have not found any earlier Hollingshead children named Hugh or Charles and I've just checked there is only one of each in later times. John Hollingshead's father and grandfather appear to be both named William. And there are quite a few descendants named William, John and George.

I feel I should explain that descendants of John and Grace Hollingshead in the US have come up with DNA matches with quite a number of descendants of Jacob Bellett and Ann Harper who were convicts sent to Norfolk Island from the first and second fleet respectively. Later, the folk on Norfolk Island were forced to resettle in what became Hobart. Jacob and Ann and their family arrived at Hobart in October 1808. One of Jacob and Ann's daughter's, Susannah married John Birchall who had been a convict on the 'Calcutta' sent to Port Phillip to create a settlement there in 1803, when the location was found unsuitable, permission was given to relocate to what is now Hobart in Tasmania in 1804. My husband Geoff is descended from these people.

So we are trying to figure out the connection to the Hollingshead family and wonder if it originates in the Spitalfields, as Jacob was a member of a Huguenot silk weaving family there.

The only baptism for a John Hollingshead in 1699 that I can find is this one -
10th July 1669 s/o John and Alice Hollinshead, but it is in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire

In my searching I also looked for the derivation of the name Hollingshead, as you probably know it is an Anglo Saxon name more common around the Durham area. I too wondered if there was a Huguenot connection as John snr was a silk weaver.

There is a baptism in the parish register of St Botolph Aldgate on 18 June 1669 for a John son of John HOLLINGSHED & Grace his wife, Rosmary Lane and a burial in the register of St Botolph on 5 October 1669 for John son of John HOLLINGSHED, Rosmary Lane - both records available on Ancestry.

Aah thanks for finding that death of little John, it confirms my suspicion.
