John Bradley 1861 census

Sis

Rootles out resources!
Your thoughts please on what the birthplace at the top is. It's for John Bradley age 61 with wife Elizabeth, their son John is further up the page. I can see its Herts and the mark in front of Herts is an enumerators mark, as it's also on the page further up. I thought I'd worked it out, now I don't think I have. The place underneath is Kent, Trosley.
RG09, Piece 468, Folio 68, Page 19. Thank you.

Thank you for your input ladies. I will go with Tring. Still can't find his baptism though!

My longstanding brick wall is a John Bradley. :headbang: There are quite a lot of them, aren't there?

For what it's worth - yes, Tring. Definitely. :)

Tring is right on the edge of Hertfordshire by the border with Buckinghamshire, so always worth having a look there.

The Buckinghamshire Baptism Index has a baptism for a John Bradley on 1st February 1801 to parents William and Elizabeth in Wendover, which you might find interesting.

Wendover is only about 5 miles from Tring. :)

Thanks very much Jan. I will have to have a study of county borders, me thinks. Yes, I am originally from England and yes I did spend 10 years as a Post Office telephonist! But.... that was a loooooooong time ago.;)

1841 census HO107, Piece 482, Book 1, Folio 10, Page 13

Asked if John born in county, it says Yes.

There are a couple of births in Dartford for their children, John 1838 and Sarah 1840 with the mother's maiden name Bloomfield.

Bloomfield is either a mistranscription or her name at marriage was mistranscribed.

John Bradley
Elizabeth Broomfield
Marriage date: 17 Dec 1826, Holy Trinity, Dartford, Kent

Yes, I have that one thank you Terry. I saw that it said he was born in the county, but after seeing the 1851 & 1861 census I thought that maybe the enumerator had made a mistake in the 1841 census. What do you think?

It's so long since I paid this family a visit that I can't remember if I tried looking for him in Kent. Will go off and see what I can find, when I've had tea that is.

I have a copy of the marriage. It says Broomfield, but Elizabeth signed with an X, so chances are maybe she couldn't read either. Though John signed his name I doubt he would have checked what was written in the entry.

Just to confuse things the GRO gives Broomfield for John 1838 and would you believe Bloomfield for Sarah 1840.

OK, I'm away to eat before I end up having my tea at breakfast time. Thanks for your help Terry, I think I will put these people aside until I've had some sleep.
