John Hoyland 1783 - 1827

I’m having trouble finding a baptism, marriage or burial for John Hoyland who, according to the Dictionary of National Biography was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1783 and died in Louth, Lincolnshire, on 18 January 1827. He was apparently the son of a Sheffield cutler. He was organist of St James’s Church, Sheffield 1808 – 1819 and was then organist of St James's Parish Church, Louth, until his death.


I did quite a bit of searching last night but frustratingly couldn’t pin down anything I could source as evidence. I’m particularly interested in his marriage but any help would be much appreciated.
 
I haven't got a lot of time at the moment, but I did find in the Stamford Mercury for 8th January 1819

LOUTH, Jan. 6th, 1819. Mr Hoyland, Organist, St. James's Church, Sheffield, from the many assurances of his friends and the promises of support he has received, induced to remove his residence to Louth, in the course of the present month; and intends to give lessons on the Piano-forte in the town and neighbourhood.—From the experience he has had in that branch of education, he has no doubt but be shall be able to give perfect satisfaction to those parents and guardians who may please to commit their children to his care. N.B. Instruments tuned on the shortest notice in the town or country. His terms, may be known on application to Messrs. Jackson, printers, Louth.

Not much, but al least it gives a bit about his move to Louth :)

hmmm there are a fair few Hoyland Quakers Flook. It is an unusual name so I wonder if they are connected somehow. Let me know if you want me to look further into them.

Edit: I should have said in Yorkshire

I only know of his connection with the 2 Anglican Churches and that his son William succeded him at St James's, Louth, some 2 years after his death (in 1829 apparently). That certainly wouldn't necessarily preclude him from being non-conformist. If you can dig anything up I'd be very grateful.
 
FamilySearch has a baptism on 19 June 1822 at Louth of Frederick, son of John and Sarah Hoyland. The baptism register of Louth St James can be seen on the Lincs to the Past website. It confirms the details of Frederick's baptism from FamilySearch and adds an abode (Louth) and father's occupation (organist). I hope this link will take you to the right page:

Also on FamilySearch are burials for a John Hoyland on 22 January 1827 and Sarah Hoyland on 5 September 1828, both at Louth. The burial register, again on Lincs to the Past, confirms the John Hoyland burial but has no age for him. The Sarah Hoyland one has something I can't decipher in the age column, possibly a 14 in which case she is evidently not the wife but maybe a daughter? The burial register for 1813-1833 begins here:

There are other some other mentions of Louth Hoylands on FamilySearch which I haven't followed up yet.

It might be worth checking the Parish records for a marriage at this church as he would have been of the right sort of age whilst working there.
 
Thanks Daft Bat. I will do if I can find them. I've been a bit lax in my searching but I've not been feeling very bright this week (anyway that's my excuse -and we're all allowed days like that aren't we?)…..
 
There are several 'adverts' in the Stamford Mercury for Mr Hoyland's services, the last I could find being

Stamford Mercury 4th August 1826

MR. HOYLAND respectfully announces to his friends and the public that his next Quarter for instructions on the Piano-forte will commence on the 31st day of July instant; also, that he has on hand an assortment of fine-toned new Piano-fortes, from the most eminent makers, which he sells under the London prices, free from expense of carriage, &c: viz. grand Cabinet, with polished case, three unisons, and six octaves; an elegant Piano, round corners; polished case, and six octaves; a plain square ditto, with six octaves. Old Instruments taken in exchange.—Instruments tuned.—The Flute, Violin, and Violoncello taught. Schools attended. Louth, July 25th, 1826.

Unfortunately the papers for 1827 seem to be missing and I can't find a report on the death of a Sarah Hoyland (whom Jane found being buried in 1828):(

Not sure that it adds anything new, other than listing more of his works. NB that his surname is given there just as Hoylan, without the final 'd'.

From the probate records on Ancestry
William Thomas Smith Oakes of Derwent Lodge, Addison Road, Kensington, died 2nd December 1878, his widow being Helen Oakes and his estate totalling £45,000

Helen Oakes of Derwent Lodge, Addison Road, Kensington died 14th December 1910 probate being granted to William Hoyland Oakes and Montague Percy Rowland Oakes, estate totalling £16,136 5s 7d.

Not really of any help as regards John, but I do like to go off at a tangent :rolleyes:

Thank you for these finds Ann. I hadn't come across Helen before and so I'll have to chase her up. There are in fact 2 John Hoyland's connected with Louth as there is a John J Hoyland living in Spalding in the 1861 Census (and the 1851). He is aged 42 (so born c1819) and was born in Louth. As he is a 'Teacher of Music' I suspect he is the older John Hoyland's son although I've looked on Lincs to the Past and I haven't found a baptism for him yet.

Ah, I've now found the baptism of John Jeffrys Hoyland, son of John and Sarah, at St James's Louth on 27th october 1819. John senior is described as an organist.

A double thank you Ann. In the 1851 census for Louth (HO107/2111/308/4) Ellen is living with her sister Jane and the Head of the household is Sarah Horsewood, a widow, age 75 born Sheffield. This looks awfully like John Hoyland's widow.

I'm currently scouting around to find her marriage. I'm fairly certain it was in Louth because there are lots of Horsewood's in the area.

I think you mean Sarah Hoyland, not Horsewood - don't know where that crept in......:oops:
Yes I do, there is a Sarah Horsewood living next door and she appears just above Sarah Hoyland and her two girls :)

On FMP's transcription the head of the household is listed as Sarah Horsewood although when you look at the original it is clearly Sarah Hoyland, so is the cause of the confusion?

Sarah Hayland - mother - widow - 80 - Yorkshire, Sheffield
along with Mary Ada and William Oakes, niece and nephew, Mary born Middlesex, William born Madras, India.
