Looking for the parents (mother to be exact) of James Stephens said to be born in St. James, Middlesex in 1848 +/-

He married Alice Gee on 9th June 1867 in St. James's Shoreditch.

James gave his father as John Thurston Stephens a Billiard Table maker.

After searching everywhere I could think of I finally ended up on Trove (why?) and found this.

The Daily Telegraph - Fri 22 Jul 1910 - Page 6
Family Notices

STEPHENS.— June 21, 1910, at Coolgardlie Sanatorium, John Thurston, beloved husband of Jane Stephens, second son of the late John Thurston Stephens, Billiard Table Maker, of Sydney; aged 44 years. Absent from the body, present with the Lord.

So born 1866'ish (possibly a brother to James.)

Now, not saying it would never happen but finding 2 John Thurston Stephens who were Billiard Table Maker's is a bit too precise to be coincidence.

I've not been able to find James, with any certainty, prior to the 1871 census where he and Alice and 2 children are living in Windsor Street, Islington.

Can anyone work out who James's parents were?

A google search brings up a Rootschat enquiry of a John Thurston
a billiard table maker from 1799 to his death in 1850 in London if
it helps!
It is suggested the connection to Stephens is through a sister.

I suspect they may have inserted Thurstan into the father's name
probably incorrectly. A marriage of a John Henry Thurstan Stephens
on 1865 has his father as just John. This is probably the one that
ended up in Western Australia.
The one female mentioned in John Thurstan's Will was married
to a Gabriel I believe it said.

John Stephens would seem to be found in 1841 at the bottom of the
second page [H107/672/6/23] as billiard table ---.
Presumably his father Robert above him. Robert is said to have died
of apoplexy in his brother in law John Thurstan's workplace.
Trees suggest that they used the name of Tuthill prior to 1841.

So James Stephens Tuthill birth registered 1846 Jun qtr St Martin.
His father John Robert Tuthill appears to have been baptised late
together with his sister Sarah in 1820 at St Giles in the Fields.
There is a suggestion they may have been Wesleyan prior.

Married Jane Ross 1887 Waverley NSW.
2 Children born in WA. Eric David, Subiaco 1901
Samuel 1903, Perth. Not sure if you are interested but here it is anyway. There must be more born somewhere between Sydney and Perth.

I've just found this thread on a random Google search.

James Stephens Tuthill aka Stephens was born Jun Q 1846 in St Martin's, London, England. GRO MMN Wilson
His mother was Lydia Eleanor Wilson.
1851 not found with any certainty
1861 with his mother 'Lidia Stevens', plus younger siblings, Robert and William, living in St Pancras.

His father, John Robert Tutill aka Stephens emigrated, arriving in Oct 1852 • Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, aboard 'Marian' Employed by Alfred Toogood as a 'billiard marker'. He had deserted Lydia and set up home with Ann/Annie Keast.

His brother William Alfred Tuthill aka Stephens was also a billiard table maker. Many tables were exported to Mr Toogood in Australia by the firm of Hopkins and Stephens - William and his brother in law, Richard John Hopkins.

Hope this helps
Margaret

Sorry, that birth was in NSW.

Interestingly, Lydia Eleanor Wilson was grandaughter of Robert Wedderburn, a well renowned preacher who was born in Jamaica in 1762 - 1763.
Plenty of information available online, which I won't repeat here.
