Hi to all you friendly people, I've been reading some of your posts, and you all seemed so friendly and helpful I just had to join in.
I've been researching for a couple of years now, following in the footsteps of my father, and my daughter does a little too. Had a running start as my husband (IT whiz) saved my Dad's files as GedComs and I used them to start our trees (more than a decade after Dad died).
Our ancestors all originated in Britain and Ireland and arrived in Oz in the 19th Century mostly as free settlers; all the convicts are on my mother-in-law's side! :). Some branches of our trees crossed over to North America as well.
I enjoy checking out the places (online and physically) where the ancestors came from and indeed we'll be visiting some of our ancestral locations in a few weeks time: going from John O'Groats to Lands End in the process.
Thanks for letting me join, I look forward to chatting with you.

P.S. Peregrine was our beautiful female Brittany Spaniel; she died last year.

Thanks, We are really looking forward to our trip and although not specifically about chasing ancestors I have created a report detailing where our direct ancestors resided to look up as we go. That said we are going to Wick and Thurso in the Highlands - Sutherland ancestors; St Just and Kelynack in Cornwall - Veale ancestors; and Stokenham in Devon - Pederick/Pedrick ancestors. As well as visiting/passing through numerous locations in Britain and southern Ireland with links to ancestors. And finally we'll be staying at Pimlico in London for almost a week - Gale ancestors many of whom were Thames watermen/lightermen. Can't wait!

Welcome Peregrine. Glad to meet you C|:-)
My Sutherland ancestors were from Brora and Grandad was born in Lady Loch.
OOOH we could be related:)
Did I see Veale ancestors? I have some of those as well. From Cornwall.
Grandmother was Susannah Vale who married a Nancarrow from Illogan.
mmmmm I wonder?
Sorry that should be Great Grandmother.

Welcome to Top Dog Peregrine C|:-) You sound like your off on the holiday of a lifetime. I know a lot of us will be green with envy.

Hi Peregrine, I join with all the above in welcoming you to the group, although I hasten to say that I too am green with envy about your forthcoming trip to the UK.;) I have very strong ancestry from Cornwall and Devon, and indeed spent most of an idyllic childhood there. I also lived next to Pimlico in my teens so I know all three of these areas very well. Ah well, off now to buy another lottery ticket.........................! Some wonderful help on this forum, so don't forget to keep in touch before, after and during your travels, especially if you have any brick walls that you want to knock down. :)

So many Sutherlands in the Highlands, and with their naming patterns and inter-marrying cousins it is so difficult to pin them down. I don't have a Susanna Veale/Veal in my tree. My husband's Veales originated from St Just in Penwith and I have access to a published history on the family and other research. In the Veale tree I discovered that my husband and life-long girlfriend are related, so anything is possible.

My maiden name is Sutherland and I come from a long line of Alexander's, Charles' and Angus'. Sutherland's marrying Sutherland's o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O
As to the Veale's, mine go back to Richard Veale and Temperance Aish from Ashwater Devon marrying in 1615. Later generations moved to Cornwall then over here to Broken Hill, Kadina South Australia and Kalgoorlie Western Australia.
Such a coincidence.

Hello and welcome to Top Dog Peregrine C|:-)

Sounds like you are going to have a great time over here - hope you manage to achieve all your goals :)

Hi Peregrine and welcome to TD. Just know you're gonna fit right in, lots of helpful friendly peeps waiting to sink their teeth into brickwalls so if we can help then post away. Enjoy your trip, sounds like you've got a lot planned and if you are in London try and make time for the National Archives at Kew - with a stroll around Kew Gardens afterwards.

Umm, coincidentally my husband's grandmother, Lila Rita Veale was born in Kalgoorlie in 1903!

Hi Peregrine,
Whilst I don't believe there to be a connection in the Sutherland's, I have been having a quick look at our Vale's (incidentally the name was changed from Veale to Vale on arrival in Australia) and there a quite a few common first names. If there is a connection there, then nothing stands out but needs lots more researching. Maybe something on a branch line.
Philip Walter Vale/Veale, my ancestor arrived with his 17 year old wife, Eliza Jane Rowe in 1864 on the Utopia. His sister Magdalena and her husband were also on the same ship.
I will keep looking and comparing trees to see if I can either find or not a connection.

Sue
