Lafayette's

Can anyone identify this portrait by Lafayette's? I've had a look on their website, which can be searched by year, but the serial number is difficult to decipher, and none of the photos seem to match (apart from one gentleman in an identical spotted tie!).
It would appear that they only photographed Royalty, or famous/wealthy clients, so he must have been someone important.

That's a good idea. I just thought I'd try the path of least resistance first! I spent ages yesterday looking through their online catalogue, without success.

I know the feeling, I always try and find something myself but many's the time I've given up and sent an e-mail to a record office/museum or whatever  I've usually been pleasantly surprised at the outcome :)

Lafayette's records do not go back that far! They have sent all their early stuff to the V&A, so I'll have to try there.

No reply, as yet, from the V&A, but on another site there have been several suggestions: Elgar (I don't think so), and more recently: Sir William (Wilhelm) Schlick 1840 - 1925 (more probable).
I have found several photos of the latter, but none at the right age for my photo.

@arthurk , my grandmother was indeed a beneficiary of Dora Frances Townsend's will, which would explain how she came into possession of the photographs, albums etc., amongst other things.
Perhaps the 'distinguished gentleman' in the Lafayette mezzo tint had a connection to the Townsend family.
