Links

I may just have missed this, but when a link is posted it seems to appear on two lines; http//www on one line and the rest on a second line. Is there a reason for this? Using an iPad it is impossible to click on such a link to access it, and short of writing it down (medieval technology!) there is no easy way to get to the site

Hi Steve

click on terms and rules at the bottom of the page ;) [whoops!! I think this is the wrong place, I'll try to find the right page ]

essentially no live links allowed to commercial sites, I just copy and paste into my address bar and that works fine

But...........you can do the more professional link ie 'just click this' I've no idea how to do that :(
Copy the URL you want to link to. Drag the cursor over the word that you want to change to a hyper link. Just above where you are typing your reply there is a symbol that looks like a link from a chain. Click on that. Paste the URL in to the appropriate spot and away you go.

Om my iPad I place my finger on to a word on the second line and hold it until a popup appears with options to select etc. Expand to highlite the entire second line, select copy, go to a browser and place my finger over the url bar and hold until paste appears, select paste and away you go. Convoluted but gets me there.

The URL is the line that appears at the top of your browser starting with www. or http. If on a desk top windows computer simply place your cursor over it then right click and select copy. Go back to the reply you are typing and holding the left mouse button down drag your mouse over the word you want to turn n to a link. Release the left mouse button then left click on the link symbol. A pop up appears with a box with URL to the left of it. Right click on that box and select Paste then left click on Insert and it is done.

Thanks Doug. Dont have an ipad but am now able to do that on my phone!:)

Sorry, but I've tried this half a dozen times and it takes me back to the thread not to a new site. I'll just revert to pen and paper I think

Hi Steve.

Think I missed a bit:

I place my finger on to a word on the second line and hold it until a popup appears with options to select etc. Expand to highlite the entire second line, select copy, go to a browser and place my finger over the url bar and hold until the box with options appears, tap on select all, hold finger on URL bar again until options with paste appears, select paste.

You may need to add the www. Etc to the front of the url address.

Thanks for that Doug - however...... When I open the box which contains the url, the address shown is clearly the address of the thread - not the link which I wish to open. Is this correct? When I try to do as you suggest the thread just opens again

Not sure we are talking about the same thing Steve. My post at 18 is how to access a web page from a link which has been broken into two lines because it goes to a commercial site. Are you talking about that or how to turn a word in to a hyperlink?

If the former, when I referred to word on second line I meant when you see something like this:

WWW.
ABC.gov.au

So, place finger over ABC.gov.au and hold, a popup appears which includes the word Copy. Narrow the shaded area to just cover ABC.gov.au by dragging the blue dots in. Tap the word Copy. NOTE If the blue dots do not play nicely Tap the word Reply under the post you are trying to copy the text from which creates a draft reply then follow the same procedure. Once you have been able to copy the piece of text ABC.gov.au you can delete the draft reply by tapping the floppy disc icon above the message box then tap Delete draft.

Now, tap and hold momentarily a word in the url box either of the page you are already on or by opening another page. The url will change but we are not yet finished. Lift, then tap and hold again and you should see options including Select All. Tap Select All. Then tap Paste. The url should now be ABC.gov.au. You may now need to type www. at the front of ABC.gov.au. Refresh the page and you should be there.
