Maurice and Isaac Smith, St Albans

This is in connection to finding the family of Samuel Smith born about 1744.

Having been looking at my Smiths again, I have discovered a notice in the Herts archives about a mortgage agreement in 1785 between Samuel Smith of Old Parkbury (its in the hamlet of Colney Street, near St Albans) and John Beyer of St Albans.

John Beyer can only be found in 2 other records. 1790 poll book, Cashio ward and another agreement in 1795 between him, a gentleman with wife Mary, and Isaac Smith, gentleman, and Maurice Smith

I think it could be the same Isaac Smith that was buried a baptist in 1831 in St Albans with a birth of 1778. But Maurice is a complete blank

Samuel Smith was married in St Saviour, Southwark, but there is no obvious birth, especially with his common name. I'm wondering if Isaac and Maurice could be relatives, as they seem to not have been born or married in St Albans either.

I wonder if anyone can help find out more about these people to see if they are "mine". Thank you

Just a thought. Looking at these names would make me think, Jewish. Maurice, Morris is the equivalent of Moshe or Moses. Maybe try those.

Who did your Samuel marry in Southwark? According to the mortgage agreement Old Park Bury is in the parish of St Stephen, St Albans and FMP hold parish records for St Stephen and there are quite a few baptismal records of children of a Mr Samuel SMITH and Dorcas his wife from 1781 onwards. You may already have this, but there is a burial record at St Stephen St Albans on 14 March 1834 for a Samuel SMITH, aged 90, and one for a Dorcas SMITH on 2 January 1816, aged 60. Ah just found the marriage on 24 November 1777 at Southwark of Samuel to a Dorcas TOOVEY of Watford by licence and one of the witnesses was a Richard SMITH - perhaps a relative? Again quite a few parish records in St Albans including a burial at St Albans Abbey on 10 April 1809 for a Richard SMITH, aged 68. Again somewhat speculative given the surname SMITH but it would give him a birthdate of c1741. This Richard did leave a Will according to the Hertfordshire Probate Index. I too cannot find any trace of a Maurice/Morris SMITH in the parish registers of St Albans.

Just looking through some PCC Wills on Ancestry for any SMITHs of St Albans and have come across the Will of a James SMITH of St Albans dated 16 May 1806 in which he mentions amongst many various SMITH relatives a bequest of £5 to John SMITH the son of his nephew Isaac SMITH. Could this be the Isaac mentioned earlier? Given that you found a burial record for an Isaac SMITH in the Baptist church, there is also a PCC Will for an Elizabeth SMITH of St Albans, widow of the late William SMITH of St Albans, Bricklayer, dated 16 September 1844 in which she states that she desires to be buried in the Baptist Chapel Burial Ground of St Albans - perhaps another relative? There are a lot of PCC Wills for SMITHs of St Albans!!
