More Jukes/Jewkes/Jacques etc, usual trouble

I have a Mary Ann Jukes who married a William Hugill (bootmaker) in England, had a few children, then went to Canada and had a few more children.

Problems: 1) Cannot find a birth record for Mary Ann, said to have been born around 1802 in either Yorkshire or Birmingham (according to Canadian Death Record for 1873).

2) Cannot find Mary Ann's marriage to William Hugill in England before she goes to Canada with her family

3) Cannot find a Passenger List with any of the family on.

Added spice: William Hugill is well accounted for, born/bap 5 JUL 1802, Bransdale, Ryedale, Yorkshire, England, son of Solomon Hugill and Esther Rachel Wilkes.

Where & when in England did they have these children, and what were their names?

Don't know whether you have already found this one, but there is a Mary Ann JUKES baptised on 5 June 1803 at Harborne (part of outer Birmingham) daughter of John & Jemima JUKES. The only other likely candidate I can find is a Mary JUKES born 5 December 1802 but not baptised until 23 April 1810 at Birmingham St Martin, parents Benjamin & Elizabeth JUKES. Mary Ann's Canadian death record definitely states she was born c1802 in Birmingham.

I am also having difficulty finding an immigration record for the family, but it must be prior to 1861 as they are in the 1861 census of Fullarton together with children Joseph, Emma, Rachel & Enoch, all being described as Wesleyan Methodists. Looking further at this census record, Joseph is shown as aged 20 and born in Canada West, therefore presumably they emigrated prior to 1841.

Sorry have to go now but will look again later.

Thanks to Janet I've found them in 1851 in Oxford East, Canada West, using only their initials for most of the entries.

The eldest child is a daughter MA Hugill aged 18, who I assume to be Mary Ann. She was baptised 2 Nov 1834 at St Martin in the Fields, the daughter of William & Mary Ann Hugill, Bootmaker, Duke Street, Lincoln's Inn.

The next child is Wm aged 16 said to be born England, but I cant find a baptism for him

There is also listed (after William & Mary Ann but before the children) a Bess Jeffries aged 22, also a shoemaker.

There is a marriage entry at St Pancras Parish Chapel, Camden on 3 Sep 1833 for a William Hugill, but the index doesn't show a bride, however, searching for a Mary Ann married at the same place on the same date brings up a Mary Ann Jefferys. Searching under her name then brings up a the marriage wrongly transcribed as William Nugill (his signature is clearly HUGILL):

3 Sep 1833 St Pancras Parish Chapel
William Hugill bachelor of this parish & Mary Ann Jeffereys (signed as Jeffries)
Wits: William Case & Emily Jones

But if this is them, where does JUKES come from?

ADDED - Doh! Mary Ann Jeffereys/Jeffries was a widow.... off to find her first marriage

Possibly - marriage 17 May 1828 St Clement Danes, Westminster
Benjamin Smith JEFFRIES bachelor of this parish
Mary Ann JUKES spinster of this parish
Wits: Jane Truman & Geo Davies

Burial 13 Jun 1832 St Clement Danes, Westminster
Benjamin Jeffries aged 29 of the Workhouse

I think my transcription of 'Bess Jeffries' is actually Ben (Benjamin). In 1861 the family immediately following the Hugill's are John B Jeffries aged 31 and his presumed wife, Catherine

The only baptisms I can see to Benjamin & Mary Ann Jeffries are these:

30 Jun 1829 Westminster
Benjamin Jukes s/o Benjamin & Mary Ann Jeffries, Ogle St, Servant

30 Jun 1833 St Martin in the Fields, Westminster
Benjamin s/o Benjamin Smith & Mary Ann Jeffries, Upper St Martins Lane, Servant

This second baptism is after Benjamin Sr's burial, so I'm not sure whether its the same child baptised twice?

There are subsequent entries in the US and Canada for John Benjamin/John B Jeffries, Shoemaker, born c1829-1832, England. One of his children is Enoch born c1877

Snap Andromeda and well found! I have just come back to the search and you have beaten me to it. The marriage of Mary Ann to William HUGILL that I found is only a typed transcription so no indication as to whether she was a widow or a spinster.

Thanks @janetbooth I dug deep and found those Jukes records but they don't really fit, do they?! The immigration lists just don't seem accessible either. Sorry I've been occupied with local stuff and haven't been back here to check much.

There is still very little about the Hugill children before their marriages etc in Canada. The family obviously traveled there before 1841 as there is a birth record for a son of William and Mary: Joseph born 1840 in Canada:
Joseph Hugill
BIRTH 28 OCT 1840,Toronto, Ontario, Canada (from the A-site)
DEATH 26 MAR 1900, Ward 6, 546 6th, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA; in State File 1188 (also from the A-site).
I have plenty of info on Joseph and his descendants but his mother's origins are still mysterious. If we could all keep our eyes alert for anything more on her, I'd appreciate it.
Find-a-Grave had some good details on William Hugill and family, including his parents' names:
Name William Hugill; Birth Date 5 Jul 1802; Place Bransdale, Ryedale District, North Yorkshire, England
Death 2 Mar 1877; Place,Ontario, Canada; Cemetery Woodland Cemetery
Place Mitchell, Perth County, Ontario, Canada
Father Solomon Hugill
Mother Esther Hugill
Spouse Mary Ann Hugill
Children: William Hugill; Charles Hugill; Rachel Hugill; William Hugill.
Mary Ann Jukes is still elusive- I also have several people with this same name in my family tree from all over the place, including the Channel Islands.
