After going around in circles for a long period I thought I would reach out to people more savvy than I in finding people.

Moses James - known facts:
Married Charlotte Hall on 29 August 1867 in Merriwa, NSW - two certificates available Moses James and James Moses.
Witness at the wedding was a Thomas James
Date of birth is ~1844 as he was recorded as being 33 years old on daughter Charlotte's birth certificate of 1878. Place of birth is recorded as Sydney.
Children of the marriage - Thomas Henry James; Frederick Archibald James; Amelia Ann James; Herbert James James; Edward Walter James; Charlotte Louisa James; William Robert James; Matha Ellen James; Charles Andrew James.
Married Christina Holt on 10 May 1888 at Gunde, NSW
Children of the marriage - Walter Clarence James; George Hercules James; Clyrinda Mary James; Rebuben Moses James; Herbert Moses James
Moses and Christina moved to Mitchell, Qld in 1914
Died on 11 May 1931 in Toowoomba and buried in Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery.

There are no "Moses James" recorded as born in Australia or overseas between 1840 and 1850. The closest records are for James Moses and I have ruled out a number of potential parent lines including the most promising of Uriah Moses and Ann Daly - their son James died in Sydney in 1892; William James and Catharine Macivray - their son Moses died in 1912 in Kurri Kurri.

The last parental line that I have been able to dig up is the Hyam Moses ad Louisa Nixon line. I know that Hyam was anglicised to James for a number of immigrants and this I thought was promising. Hyam (Dealer) and Louisa, living in Castlereagh Street are listed as parents on a birth certificate for James Moses born 3 December 1844 and baptised at Parish of St. Lawrence, Sydney, in the County of Cumberland.

Hyam Moses in many trees is listed as Hyam (William) Moses with information that does not exactly fit together well. Louisa Nixon is also mentioned as the mother of a James Mow who married Sarah Colemen in 1878. The father was recorded as William Eli Mow.

I am thinking that Moses James is the son of Hyam Moses and Louisa Nixon and has changed his name before he married Charlotte and has dropped all of his parentage from all records as there is no father or mother metioned on his marriage or death records.

Can anyone please help with any information that would prove or disprove my theory.

Hyam Moses and Louisa Nixon married at St James Sydney in 1841.
In 1843 there appears a Samuel born to Immah and Louisa Moses at St Bartholomew Prospect.
1844 James to James Moses and Louisa St Lawrence Sydney.
Whether the name Immah is supposed to be James or Hyam, I have no idea.

Ah ha! Thought as much. There is an application to marry for Hyam Moses and Louisa Nixon. Hyam was transported on the Lady Faversham for a term of 14 years. He was 32 years of age but I have yet to find his records. Louisa looks like she came free.

Hyam Moses was indicted for stealing on 17th Sept. 6 veils, value 1 pound, 3 shillings, the goods of Jonathon Ward. Item 1927 in 1827
Hyam Moses was indicted for stealing 12 handkerchiefs value 1pound and 10 shillings, the goods of William Dudley. Item1928 in 1827
Guilty both charges and transported for 7 years for each offence.
Each of the cases he states his age as 20 years.
Louisa Nixon may have been an immigrant, I’ll look into that, but Hyam was not an immigrant of choice.;)
To add, many convicts or their offspring changed their names.

Just to add to this story……We all know Louisa Nixon very well here. I believe her to be the daughter of Samuel Nixon and Frances, both of whom have many pages of research on this site, by one of our now departed friends from Canada. :(
One hint could be that Charlotte and Moses James have a daughter Charlotte LOUISA.
 
Oh dear, I feel these Nixon’s have come back to haunt me. Seems Hyam aka William Moses went to Victoria around 1842 and died there in 1873. Louisa in her wisdom took up with a fellow of the name of James Juby Douglas about 1846, another convict. She died as Louisa Douglas in 1915.
Hyam and Louisa had 3 sons, William, Samuel and James. To be quite honest, I would change my name as well if Louisa was my mother. The Nixon’s were a strange lot. We were all over the place with them.

Brothers discharged to the care of their brother by order of undersecretary. 20/6/1872.
Apparently James their father had died in 1870 and Louisa couldn’t support these two boys. (There are girls as well but so far I haven’t come across them in care)
The problem I have is that there doesn’t seem to be older brothers with the surname Douglass for these boys to go to, unless they went to one of the sons of Hyam and Louisa Moses!
 
I think you can also rule out James Mow who marries Sarah Coleman/Cornell/Cornwall in 1878. James was born in Bathurst c1844/45 and died in Gosford in 1927. I also don’t recall Louisa Nixon being in Bathurst. He was buried at Emu Plains which is where he was living earlier. Wife Sarah buried there as well. His son James Mow was born at Emu Plains in 1883, died in 1928 and is also buried there. The surname Mow seems to be Oriental if you check BDM. Although perhaps not always.
