Murdoch Finlayson Munro

Any information on this man most welcome. He was born, probably in Scotland on 12 June 1922 and died 1 May 2001 in Melbourne. He emigrated probably after 1949 but it is not known whether he married before emigrating or not. Nothing known about family or ancestors.

Scotland's People have a Murdoch Munro born 1922 Kirkintilloch Dunbarton....498/00. 0246...can't tell you any more as you have to order the certificate...there were 2 other Murdochs but they were born 1930...I would suggest you check this site you need to buy credits to look at anything...it only cost 1 credit to get this information ...I am a member but it's easy to join....no mention of Finlayson but it's not unusual for names to be added that were not registered at birth....most likely his mothers surname...

The only marriage I found was for a Murdoch Nichols Munro in 1945...unless he married in England...

Many thanks for this, I have passed it to the lady in Australia for her to follow up.

On fmp I found an M Munro aged 26 birth year given as 1923 School Teacher departed London 21/3/1949 for Sydney...ship Orcades...Orient Line Master C Fox...this was the only one that departed in 1949

On fmp I found only one marriage for a Murdoch Munro ..1q. 1940. To a Murdina B McLennan...Andover Hampshire... Apart from the birth I not sure if this other information is likely to be correct...good luck to the lady in Oz....Val

From the Melbourne General Cemetery website I see he is buried at Bunurong Memorial Park. He's shown as Roman Catholic.

Do you have any other information about him, apart from the dates of birth and death? What evidence is there that he was born in Scotland? When is the first sighting of him in Australia?

Re. his birthplace and emigration date, might his death certificate answer those questions? (I am not an expert on Australian certificates but believe the death certificates can be a lot more informative than English ones: see Doug's article here.)

I have also seen this departure and am informed that this is not our man. He definitely was not a school teacher. Thanks anyway.

Unlikely as he would only have been 17-18 at the time. Thanks anyway.

I am asking on behalf of a lady in Australia whose distant relative this is. She has given me dates of birth and death plus rumours that he was ships crew who jumped ship on reaching Australia. He may have had a sister Rachel who stayed in Scotland and he worked as a Barman in Melbourne. He left Scotland about 1949 apparently.

Perhaps it's worth scouring Merchant Navy records (though I suspect the ones online stop too early?) and crew lists in case of any clues. So far the only vaguely matching man I've found is a 22 year old able seaman Murdo Munro, on a list of the crew of the S.S. Fort Caribou upon arrival in New York on 22 June 1943. He was a British national, of Scotch race, 5'7" tall, 166 lb, with no 'physical marks, peculiarities or disease'. He'd done 6 years' service at sea. Like many of his crew mates he had 'Shipped or engaged' on 2.4.43 at Glasgow. (from FamilySearch, New York Passenger and Crew Lists).

He must have started young if he had 6 years service and was 22 on arrival in New York.

Yes, very young. In those days I think education was only compulsory up to 14 years of age. Sadly some boys who were only 14 died serving in the Merchant Navy in the Second World War :( :

According to my contact she was told that Murdoch Munro was a distant cousin of her father's. She is going to apply for the Death Certificate now her PayPal account is up and running again.

My contact is now applying for the Death Certificate for Murdoch Munro and will let me know what she discovers. For the time being this thread is now answered. Thanks to all of you who have given your time and resources to trace this man.

I met Murdoch Munro in Melbourne in 1994. If it is the same one as above,he was the brother of my mother Mary Cornell nee Munro. Born on the Isle of Skye Scotland. Mary Cornell is still alive just turned 98 years of age I don't think he was given a middle name in Scotland. However he could have adopted one. I think he worked on Australian railways. He never went back to the isle of Skye after leaving in the 1930s

I found you mothers birth on the Isle of Skye...but no Murdock...The Isle of Skye comes under Inverness and I searched between 1916 and 1930 with name variants...other than the previous birth that I found there is no Murdock Munro in the time span we were given...Welcome Iain...

If you read the earlier threads you will see we were trying to help locksby who was in turn trying to help a friend in Australia...we don't know her connection to your uncle....
