It was today, March 9 th 1562 in Naples, Italy, that kissing in public was banned by law and made punishable by death. Institutions were concerned about morals and public health. However, this action had very little effect on the spread of the plague in Europe.

But, this was not the first time that kissing was banned. In 1439, King Henry VI banned kissing in an attempt to stop the spread of a plague in Britain.

However, as late as 1910 kissing in stations was banned because it was considered that the passionate kissing by couples was keeping trains from departing on time. But this was more of a station directive rather than a National Law, and is not enforced today.

Mind you, I have not discovered whether any of these rules have been rescinded…
