Trying to find the marriage for the parents of:

George Evans Pratt
BIRTH 14 DEC 1929 • Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England; V9c p1231; mother Wagstaffe
DEATH 4 MAY 1993 • Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England; Regr C39D Subdist 0421C Entry 212, aged 63 years

Father is said to be either:
William Evans Pratt
BIRTH
17 DEC 1884 • Coalville, Leicestershire, England

OR
Albert Pratt- origin disputed but on several family trees of family members.

Mother:
Amy Wagstaffe
BIRTH DEC 1889 • Bedford, Bedfordshire, England; V3b p338; mother White

Perhaps I have overlooked the obvious, but this shouldn't be as hard as it's been! It's fine if they didn't marry- just that all other family members did.

According to the 1939 Register, George E PRATT's dob is 16th December 1929, but I have seen records a couple of days out in the 1939.

The family are living at 182 South Street, Adwick Le Street, Yorkshire and are listed as being (all with surname PRATT):

Amy S 24th February 1885
William Evans 17th December 1884
Walter S 8th October 1909
Albert E 30th September 1910
Leslie E 18th March 1918
Lewis E 28th February 1922
Norman E 1st April 1925
George E 16th December 1929

Moving back to 1921 census, it shows that their eldest son (William) was born in Leicestershire (the family were living at 94 Coppice Road, Adwick Le Street, Yorkshire) in 1906 and Walter (as shown above) was born in Nottinghamshire. It also states that Amy was born in Basford, Notts. Note: we now have a different year of birth for Amy as well as place of birth.

Now, I picked up Walter James (recorded as Walter S in 1939) and checked his birth registration. It shows as being the December quarter of 1909 in Basford RD - but with the mother's maiden name as being WEBSTER, not WAGSTAFFE.

They also had a daughter, Florence in 1914, so I checked that birth registration:

Another WEBSTER.

Mother:
Amy Wagstaffe
BIRTH DEC 1889 • Bedford, Bedfordshire, England; V3b p338; mother White
Could Basford in Nottinghamshire been misread as Bedford and conclusions drawn from there?

Just a thought....

Still searching for the marriage...

William Evans Pratt married Amy Webster in Ashby de la Zouch in 1906, they are on the 1911 census living at 3 Welbeck St Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire,
Piece number 20440

George Evans Pratt was the only one of their children born with the mother's name Wagstaffe.

There are 2 Amy Webster's born in Basford one in 1887 and one in 1888

William and Amy married on 14 Apr 1906 in Ellistown, Leicestershire.

Amy's father is entered as Joseph Noble a collier

I'm wondering if the name of Wagstaffe on the birth is correct. Only way to really find out is to get the birth certificate. Sadly it isn't available in digital format.

Or he could be the son of one of William and Amy's children and brought up as one of theirs. William and Amy had at least 3 son's who were old enough to have fathered children in 1929. If one of the son's had got a girl in the family way and William and Amy took the child of her hands so to speak.

Dates of birth for Amy Pratt nee Webster

1906 - 1885 (age 21 on marriage certificate)
1911 - 1885
1921 - 1885
1939 - 24 Feb 1885

The only Amy Webster I can find with a birth date of 24 February in Basford was born in 1887 in the workhouse, Basford. She was the illegitimate daughter of Amelia Webster, domestic servant of Hucknall.

The trees on Ancestry have that Amy Pratt's death was registered in Doncaster in 1951.

The only death for an Amy Pratt then gives a birth year of 1888 (due to when her birthday fell it could be 1887)

Also if she was born in 1887 getting married in 1906 would only make her aged 19, but giving that she gave her age on the marriage certificate as 21 would take her out of the minor age group and into the adult, therefore no need for parental consent.

In December 1888 in Basford Tom Webster married Francis Miriam E (EVANS?) Wagstaff Same page
In December 1888 Amy Webster birth reg in Basford.
Does this fit?

Sorry I haven't got into this yet- travels, weird germs etc

So, do people think that the surname Wagstaffe is a mistake in the records or that there are children in the family with different mothers?

The nexus of my original question was formed from the fact that a a currently-living Miss Pratt, born 1954, is a DNA Match to me and she says her father was George Evans Pratt. FreeBMD:
FreeBMD Births Mar 1930 Pratt George E [mother]Wagstaffe Doncaster 9c 1231.

I have now worked out an alternative scenario which involves a different method of acquiring a surname- from your mother rather than your father:
This fellow William Evans Pratt
BIRTH 17 DEC 1884 • White Hill, Hugglescote, Coalville, Leicestershire, England
DEATH 24 JUN 1960 • Doncaster, Yorkshire, England;
had mother:
Mary Ann Pratt
BIRTH MAR 1867 in Packington, Leicestershire, England
DEATH 29 JUN 1948 at 2 Cumberland Rd,Ellistown Hugglescote Leicester.
And father:
Wlliam Evans
BIRTH 1865 in Swannington, Leicestershire, England
DEATH 01 MAY 1934 at Broadmoor, Pembrokeshire, Wales; in Broadmoor Asylum;

But he kept his surname as Pratt while his siblings were all Evanses.

He married Amy Webster who was born 24 FEB 1887 at 3 Welbeck St, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire, England; Reg Basford V7b p184; and I'm still trying to discover Amy's mother.
Meanwhile
George Evans Pratt
BIRTH 14 DEC 1929 in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England; V9c p1231; mother Wagstaffe,
is only the STEP-father of my DNA Match, so we don't have to worry about him any more!
