Not the Best meal!

Charlotte Brontë could be a rather fussy person. She was courted by her father’s assistant curate, the Reverend Arthur Bell Nicholls for 10 years before making it clear that she was not interested. (They married in the end!)

By the way, when Charlotte, Emily and Anne started writing, they used names that gave no indication of their sex. Charlotte was Currer Bell and I wonder if the “Bell” surname came from Arthur….

However, I digress…

Following a rather unpleasant meal, Charlotte is reported to have said, “The humour I am in is worse than words can describe. I have had a hideous dinner of some abominable spiced-up indescribable mess, and it has exasperated me against the world at large.” (Say it as it is, Charlotte!)

One can only hope that this meal did not take place on her birthday, today 21st April, Charlotte having been born in 1816. :)
