Can anyone read what it says in the occupation column please?

If anyone wants to take a look at the original, it is the 1861 census for Walter Tait (FMP have it as TALT) RG9/3567/97/14.

In 1841 and 1851 he was a butcher. 1871 a gardener, 1881 a market gardener.

The only part I think i can make out is at the end "& potato merchant"

As I don’t have subs could you let us know the county please?
There is a Rev Walter Tait, born Edinburgh, Primitive Methodist, in Tavistock.

Thank you all. I was completely stumped.
Does the top line belong to him as well? Because it kind of looks like 'Primitive Methodist Local Preacher' o_O

Primitive Methodist, then something else, then peculier in brackets? Oh, yes, it could very well be "Local".

Never seen mention before of him being some sort of a preacher. However, the 1841 census has his sister Ellen Tait listed as a Servant in the house of a Joseph Thompson who was involved with the Church (1851 he is listed as the Vicar of Kirk Ella).

Haven't worked out yet if Joseph Thompson is related to Walter's mother, Jane Thompson - or if the 1841 census is just a co-incidence.

For Primitive Methodist history and research it's often useful to have a look at

In this case, though, I can't see anything on Walter Tait.
