Portsmouth customs officers

I'm looking for any information on Henry James Clark born approx 1792 joined HM Customs in Portsmouth 1806 to 1834.

I live in Adelaide South Australia so my only option is to pay for research at Kew National Archives.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Can you give us any other information about him for context? Wife? children? Do you have him on any census etc?

Wife Mary Dormer Carter, married in Portsmouth 11 May 1834. Children, Robert Holloway, Norman, Wilson John (I descend from) Mary Elizabeth, Harriet Josepha, Ellen Jane. They appear in census 1841 Shoreham, Maldon, Chelsea through to 1881. Henry James died Chelsea 16 August 1881 buried West Brompton cemetery.

Census state various birth places, London Middlesex, Eltham Kent. I've been trying to find info on his parents with no luck. Was hoping to find something through Customs records eg when he first joined. He appears in CUST 60 for Cowes 1857,his last appointment.

You probably have this……first appointment on Isle of Wight, 2/4/1849-October 1857. Occupation was collector and jerquer. PDF, Customs Officers on Isle of Wight.

As his eldest brother was Robert Holloway Clark, according to FS tree, then there is a marriage in Chatham Kent of Andrew Clark to Sarah Holloway in 1787. My thoughts are that his father may also have been attached to Customs or similar in Chatham. This tree does not have any information further than this marriage but shows Andrews father as marrying in Gillingham Kent.

Looking at the marriage cert (on FMP), I think Mary Dormer's surname was CATER not Carter, if so there is a non conformist baptism (Portsea Meeting House) for Mary Cater daughter of Richard and Mary 13/10/1809 which may be her.

I would have thought HM Customs would have recorded applicants address /parents names, when they were first employed. UK National Archives Kew has records CUST. I have Henry in the Ages and Capability books
