I have been contacted by a lady saying that her grandfather was a postmaster in my town. As he is now dead I only have what she can tell me and she has also supplied a picture.

Trouble is he was postmaster in the 30's 40's.

I thought that will be my next project. Post masters of Knighton. I have trawled the censuses and have come up with this.

20th Jan 1832 William Weyman was appointed Postmaster of Knighton on 20th January 1832 married Hannah whiston 22/7/1828

Does anyone know if there are any online records?

It might take a bit of a rummage, but the Bristish Postal History website used to have staff records online. Not sure if they still do, though...

Edited to add: scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is a section on family history. :)

I thought I might find something in the papers, but there seems to be very little mention of Postmasters in Knighton. I did find the following, which, at least, mentions three of them in one go.....
Brecon and Radnor Express 13th July 1916
Knighton—Mr Thomas Lloyd, who has been, a clerk in the Post Office here for about 21 years, was last week appointed salaried sub-postmaster at Newnham, Gloucester. Mr Lloyd came to this office from Shrewsbury during the last illness of the late Mr CharlesLangford (postmaster), served as clerk during the years in which Mrs Palfrey held the office of post-misstress (and owing to her regretted illness) he discharged the duties of postmaster for the greater part of the past two years. He has been a, faithful member of the church choir and ever ready to unite with every other denomination in organising concerts for charitable purposes. Until the outbreak of war, when the local eisteddfodau was temporarily discontinued, he discharged the duties of, secretary to the Choral Society in a most satisfactory manner. Mr Lloyd has also been connected with the football, hockey and golf clubs of the town, and a very large circle of friends in this district will wish him every success in his new sphere.

Ann:)

Thank you very much indeed Ann, I trawled the papers and found nothing. This is excellent.

Thank you again.

I was told that Cecil Ernest Jones was postmaster in the 30's 40's but have found this

Brecon & Radnor Express - 16th December 1915
"It had for some time been known that Knighton Head Office would eventually be reduced to the rank of a salaried sub-office, not (as some supposed) on account of any decrease in the business, but owing to the operation of the recommendations of the Holt Committee (1913), who were appointed by the House of Commons to inquire into and report on the wages and other conditions of employment in the Post Office. The change of status was made on the 1st of October, and since that date, Knighton, with its sub-offices, has been attached to Llandrindod Wells, under Mr Bunnage, the head postmaster."

So he couldn't have been postmaster as that position no longer existed.

Then again, even if he ran a sub- office he was in effect the local postmaster for want of a better title, no? Could be it was franchised by then & he ran his own business as happens here in Australia.

Thank you very much indeed Wendy. All these little bits go to prove that he was involved with the post office. Looks like he started at the bottom and worked his way up.

Thank you again.
