Marriage in Braintree of a George Poulter. 2 names on the same page........Eliza Pasfield and Amelia Pasfield. December 1850 page 48 Vol 12
According to trees on Ancestry he married Amelia Pasfield. No parents names given for him, but born c.1818 Wethersfield, Essex.

Elijah Poulter Dec 1861 Braintree 4a 302???

Yes, that may be a possibility that I had never thought of. Maybe the census takers mistakenly took him as a Colbourn, when he may have been a nephew to the head. Similarly if Elizabeth Coulbourn was the same Elizabeth Coulbourn that would become his 3rd wife (birth year the same) then she was Mary's sister (or the head's sister in law). Although Mary is down as the wife, they only marry later. Again, many thanks.

The Elijah Poulter from Baintree (circa 1859) appears in an 1881 census, so it couldn't be that one as he appears on the 1881 census as a Colbourne!

I'm not sure if this is on the right track?
Nether do I but just eliminating possibities.
Charles James Poulter marriage in 1868 to Sarah Louisa colbourn in Greenwich 1d 972
Sarah Louisa Maria Colbourn 24 12 1843 to Joseph and Mary Ann.
So Eleanor on the 1881 census must be Sarah's daughter, born 1870 in Deptford. Just setting the scene here, slowly
In 1891 the family is in Fulham St Clements. Eleanor is 21. Charles Jnr is 16 and an engineers apprentice. Then there is a load of other kids the youngest is Rose 1 year old.

Found on a message board an enquiry of Charles James Poulter, born 1843 Bromley. I have no idea where Bromley is but is this a possibility. Charles Poulter, September 1843 Fulham.
As he and his family are found in Fulham in 1891.........

Hi Archie's mum,

It's not that straight forward with Charles James Poulter (1847). . In the 1871 census he and Sarah are living in the same house as a Henry and Mary (nee Colbourne!) Woner (we think this should have been Warner). Charles and Sarah have their first daughter Emily, and Henry and Mary have Eleanor.

By the 1881 census Henry Woner has disappeared and Charles and Mary are now living as husband and wife (though they only marry later). Sarah is in an asylum by now, and Eleanor is down as a child of Charles and Mary. There were two children, Eleanor and William Joseph Warner born to Henry and Mary Warner, and these were taken on or adopted as Poulter children. I've found the birth certificate for both of these children. An interesting thing though is that when Charles and Mary finally marry, she's down as a spinster. I think it is to muddy the waters, but there is a small chance that another Mary Colbourn with the same birth year was around (though I doubt it).

Besides trying to find Charles James Stevens Poulters birth details, I also cannot find where Charles James Poulter (1847) goes to in the 1861 census. He'd only have been 14 at the time but I've never found him.

Again, thank you for all the hints. Charles James seems to have been a bit of a toad!

Oh dear! How very confusing.
I'm thinking that Charles Jnr took on the Stevens for a reason, but what?
I wonder if he is the Charles James that Daft bat found born 1875
Obviously yes he is but that's just the marriage not his birth.
No stone will be left unturned.
I agree with your comments about his Dad. He didn't miss an opportunity did he?

His probate says "Charles James Stevens Poulter otherwise known as Charles James".

In his fathers probate where Dad leaves the money to him he's just called Charles James Poulter, no Stevens.

Not that it helps.:(

@Daft Bat I can't get away from this page, I keep getting the old "Unexpected Database Error" error.

OK, ignore this it's OK now, sorry.

I got that too as well as when I went back in later, the threads were all down one side with no background page....the little doggy etc.
OK now though.

I also cannot find where Charles James Poulter (1847) goes to in the 1861 census

There is a Charles Poulter in Lambeth working as a general servant
RG09/361/145/17 b1847 Brentford (I cannot see a birth reg in Brentford for a Charles Poulter).

I too keep getting the database error thingy.
