REME postings

My father was called up in early 1944 and served with REME. He rarely spoke about his time in military service and I requested his military records be supplied along with those for my two grandfathers. Those were received in short order because they had been destroyed in a fire! The records for my Dad however were on file but due to "staff shortages" there was a 12 month delay in processing. When finally received they were brief and difficult to understand hence this request for assistance.

It seems from the documents supplied my Dad was posted somewhere new on a regular basis.

In August 1944 he was at GSC 68 PTW followed by 33 TTG in November 1944; 1 TTG in December 1944; 6 TTG in January 1945; 20 TTG in March 1945 and 17 TTG in April 1945

Can anyone help by telling me where these units were located at the relevant time and roughly what sort of work was carried out.

Here's a bit about REME.

Hi @Moelyn

When I obtained my Dad's service records - yes, it was gobblegook to me as well :sceptical: - I sought assistance from his regimental museum who were great and translated everything into plain English for me via emails. I made a donation to the museum for their assistance. There is an REME museum in Wiltshire (sorry, I don't know where you are based), which looks very interesting and they do have quite a large website.

I also bought the regimental history so that I was able to fill in some of the blanks myself as to Dad's battalion's whereabouts - there were some nice little anecdotes in there, too, which would have been relevant to D Coy, where Dad served. A couple of suggestions you may have already thought about.

With my Dad's RAF records, I found it helpful just entering each piece of gobbledegook into our friend Google. Give it a try.
