Joseph Richard Drayton was born in the Gainsbro' R.D. in 1873. The son of Robert George and Eliza Drayton nee Cragg.

in 1881 the family are at the Grange, Burton Upon Stather RG number:RG11 Piece:3287 Folio:22 Page:5

Robert George, the father, is an Agricultural Labourer.

in 1901 census High Street, Ashby

on 07 Sep 1918 Joseph Richard DRAYTON age 45 an Ironstone Miner, married Florence Ann SHELTON Age 40, in St. Peter, Bottesford, Lincolnshire.

Florence's father, William SHELTON, is a Railway worker and so now is Joseph's father, Robert DRAYTON.

I suppose farming was to much for the old boy and so Robert decided to work for the railway instead.

I am not sure that there are but the National Railway Museum have a step by step guide to researching Railway ancestors here:

How did I know that someone was going to mention TNA :(. I used to be an office worker, so I can understand filing systems. The TNA have put their system in a bag and given it a good shake, saying 'Here, take a look'.:confused:

I finally found mention of the Burton Railway amongst the Ancestry Railway stuff. They appear to have just one book of employment records for Burton covering the dates 1876-1908 too early Chimp?

It tells you what steps to take when researching your railway ancestors. I am sort of bound by these steps as this is my first foray into railway ancestors.

I know that the family were living in Ashby, Lincolnshire. The rail company that was in that area at the time was Burton & Ashby Light Railway.

This is the only information that I have to go on and, well, it's a starting point. Without that I have nothing and wouldn't know where to start.

I know that some of you know the TNA way of doing things like the backs of your hands but to be honest it totally baffles me :oops:.
 
May be worth a visit to your local library chimp , as quite a bit of info comes up when you key in Robert Drayton..(I forgot the George) the carrier may nott be him but comes up several times in directories.

other bits & bobs as well, unsure if your Robert or another, re Army etc.

Have full itinerary today so can't look longer.
