Samuel Shipley Smith

Puts the Heart into Hertfordshire
Sorry it's a missing Smith, but here goes.

Samuel Partridge Smith was born 1803 St Albans, Herts
In 1828 a man by this name had a son with Anne - Samuel Shipley Smith - who was Christened 11th Dec at St Stephens, St Albans according to LDS

On 24th June 1833 Samuel Partridge Smith married Louisa Hawkins in Redbourne, Herts, also LDS

I have them and subsequent children in censuses where Samuel P S was a butcher, and this son does not appear. Nor can I find Samuel S S anywhere else with any certainty. A man with his middle name died in 1903 in Tenbury, Worcester, about the right age. I have no idea if it is the same one

Is his father the same Samuel P S as mine, I can't find a marriage to Anne?
This middle name does not seem to be in the family. Was it Anne's name? Or is LDS wrong?
Where did Samuel S go?
So many questions...

There is a burial of Ann Smith 16/12/1831 in St Stephen, St Albans age 32 of Abbey Parish - the same place as is entered on the bap entry for Samuel Shipley- could be your lady perhaps.

There is a burial of Ann Smith 16/12/1831 in St Stephen, St Albans age 32

That looks promising. If this is right, she was born about 1799.

On LDS I just found a marriage in 1818 of Samuel Smith and Ann Thomas in St Albans. She would have been 19 ish. He was baptised in 1803 so aged 16. So is that likely, or he might have been baptised late?

Hmmm

Marriage: 18th June 1859, Richard's Castle, after License

Samuel Shipley Smith, age 34, Bachelor, Butcher, living at Batchcott
Father's first name(s) Samuel Partridge, Butcher
Bride: Charlotte Summers, age 31, Spinster, living at Batchcott
Father's first name(s) (nothing written here), Farmer
Witnesses: Richard Gwilt Davies & Louisa Summers
Married by: W. Williams, officiating minister.

Although the fathers name for Charlotte is empty I would say her parents are Thomas & Esther Summers. There is a baptism for a Charlotte Summers with these parents in Richards Castle on 21st August 1826

An image of the original entries (marriage & Charlotts baptism) in the register are available on FMP

Have you found any other births for Samuel & Ann between 1818 & 1831?
There are only 2 births on LDS, in Norton about 23 miles from St Albans
Parents - Samuel Smith and Ann
William 1821 and Thomas 1824
No other info, I'm not convinced they're the right ones

When Samuel Partridge Smith married Louisa Hawkins on 4th June 1833 he was a widower:)

They were married by Licence "with the consent of her Edward Hawkins her father"

Both the baptismal records from the parish registers for Samuel Partridge & Samuel Shipley are on FMP, the parents for the latter being as you already have them in post 1.

Looking through the parish registers of St Albans, I can only find 3 baptisms for children of Samuel Partridge SMITH, one with wife Anne (Samuel Shipley) and two with Louisa (Louisa & Edward). You should bear in mind that the marriage between a Samuel SMITH & Ann THOMAS in 1818 may not be your Samuel as there is a baptism for a child of theirs in 1819 and he is described as plain Samuel SMITH, Mealman.

Janet

Should have said I searched the period 1818-1838 for baptisms (there are an awful lot of SMITHs), so there may be later ones as Wendy has suggested. The burial of Anne SMITH in 1831 does look promising as it says of Abbey Parish which is the address given on the baptismal record of Samuel Shipley.

That's good thank you, I hadn't seen that detail. Was that on FMP?

I can only find 3 baptisms for children of Samuel Partridge SMITH
Actually I have 10 children, 9 with Louisa (up to 1838 when you looked there was 1 more, Eliza b 1836). But I had only found a baptism for Samuel Shipley. Their 2nd to last child was Helen Hawkins Smith b 1852 and was my gg grandmother
there is a baptism for a child of theirs in 1819 and he is described as plain Samuel SMITH, Mealman.
I wasn't convinced, that Ann Thomas was right, now even less so
