Good morning England,
Coming to you from America, the state of Virginia this morning. Wondering if anyone can help me.
In the village of Sampford Brett, on their website is an antiquated family tree of Sir Walter Brito (Brett). This Brett was a knight of the Duke of Normandy when the Duke and his warriors invaded England in the year of 1066, where the Duke was the victor and crowned King of England on December 25, 1066. As a result of Sir Walter Britos service to the Duke, the Duke immediately gave Whitestaunton Manor, Chard, England to Sir Walter and his family, as well as at lest 25 other large properties to include what is now the town of Bridgewater, Somerset, England to him.
It is believed, by way of Family Crest and Family Shield, that this Sir Walter Brito and my American family are related to Sir Walter and his family of County of Somerset, England. It is also known that this family shield and crest, also was handed down to a Sir Ralph Brito. The family shield and crest has continually been handed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years.
Would anyone know anything about Sir Walter Brito and his family that produced over 25 knights from the area over the next several hundred years that helped protect the County of Somerset?
One of those knights was a Sir Alexander Brett, an official title owner of Whitestaunton Manor. This Sir Alexander Brett has been established as a relative of Sir Edward Brett from Kent, Surry, England. And, by way of a will of Sir Edward Brett, it is also known that a Mary Brett Isham, and William Brett from Bridgewater, Massachusetts were related as well.
It is through this Mary Brett Isham and daughter, Mary Isham, that future presidents of the United States, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Obama, are related to the Brett family through Martha Custis, of Goochland County, Virginia. Mary Isham also married into the William Randolph family, a very wealthy English family that also migrated to Goochland County, Virginia.
It is strongly believed also that William Brett from this family, born around 1632, that immigrated to the New World, became the progenitor of the Brett family in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. It is also known that Sir Walter was given additional lands that include the area of Bridgewater, England, today. It was the fight by William Brett, progenitor, that help found the town of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, to name that new town, Bridgewater, back in the 1600s. Is this just a coincidence? I think and believe not, because it is also known that Sir Walter Brito was kin to the Dutches Bridgewater from County Somerset, as well, and that William Brett, the progenitor, continued to hold some interest within the property of Bridgewater, England when he immigrated to the New World in the late 1600s!
Would appreciate any thoughts, knowledge, and directions from anyone to any known information pertaining to:
Sir Walter Brito
Whitestaunton Manor, Chard, County Somerset England
Mary Brett Isham
Sir Edward Brett
There now are 19 1/2 generations that have lived life since Sir Walter Brito. And to those Bretts that are relatives of Sir Walter living today, in England, please let them know that Bretts today are still alive within what is known as the United States. When the immigrants first came, they settled in Massachusetts and Virginia. Then they migrated to North Carolina, and eventually to almost every state in America today.
The first settled areas of North Carolina and Virginia were the Hertford/Northampton County North Carolina areas, and to include the Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
Thanks to anyone that may respond.
