Smart phones and the forum

This site has been optimised for use with mobile devices. It works rather well with smart phones though it certainly has a different appearance as far as the menu goes.

Thanks Peter - we were wondering how effectively it works on tablets.

What I like is no matter how narrow you make your window, the text reformats in the text box so none is missed. There are other forums that just crop off half the words. This feature will be so useful for when you want two windows open for copying or retyping information.

If you watch the space under the words Top Dog (in the header area) when you reduce the width of the window, a new clicky bar appears that says 'Forum Navigation'. A drop down list appears for use instead of the green across the screen bars.

All useful touches for modern equipment. ;)

It even works on my iphone (ineptphone, way out of date) Takes a little time to load but gets there in the end :)

The forum works fine using Opera Mini on my Nokia E7 but I'm having trouble with my tablet. Is that because it's Aspirin not Android?

P.S. Told you I was good at Daft :D

This is great, but if anyone thinks you can't do family history without an iPhone, iPad, tablet or any other gizmo, I've got my Fuller family back to 1674 without ever owning a mobile or anything apart from a pair of feet and a PC (except for this wretched iMac I bought about 2 weeks ago) :)

My most memorable family history research was done in 1996 when I took 2 weeks' holiday and stayed in the Swan Hotel in Bedford and spent most days in Bedfordshire Archives. No laptop, no mobile phone, just an A4 notebook, a box of pencils and a magnifying glass. Absolutely fabulous and those 2 weeks of notes kept me occupied for years. From that visit I got my Chapman family back to 1519. I was fortunate in finding one branch of the family who stayed in the same parish for 250 years.

It may be easier now on the internet but there is absolutely nothing like being in an archives -- and if you can smell and feel the paper -- WOW!!

It may just be my perception but the archivists in Bedfordshire then seemed more helpful and knowledgeable than some of them appear to be in other archives now

Happy hunting,
