The mystery of William Cartwright

Hello,

Little is known of William. He appears never to have married my 2x great-grandma, Ellen Dobson, but had his first child with her in Wigston, Leicestershire, in 1890. They would have a good deal more. William died in Wigston in 1910, aged 45. He always insisted he was born in Newark, Notts, but there is no birth for him there. There are Cartwrights in surrounding villages such as Norwell, but they all go different ways. William served 3 years with the militia battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment from 1885 to 1888, insisting he was born in Newark in about 1867. He is the only William Cartwright on censuses who says that he was born around this time in Newark.

I'd appreciate any fresh insight!

This could be a wild flight of fancy and his age is 10 years out, but looking for CARTWRIGHT illegitimate births at Newark on my Notts FHS Baptismal Index, I came across 3 - earlier than your William is supposed to have been born - John Fenton CARTWRIGHT in 1842, George CARTWRIGHT in 1844 & Jane Fenton CARTWRIGHT in 1846, but what caught my eye given that your William is shown as a Chimney Sweep in the 1891 census, is that the father named John FENTON is a Chimney Sweep. Looking for John FENTON on the 1871 census shows him in Newark (RG10/3541, folio 54, page 23), married to a Mary with children amongst whom is a William, also a Chimney Sweep, but, and it is a big but, he is shown as aged 14.
