This is me

I live in Reading, and as far as I know, have none from that area at all

I lived in Reading for several years and didn't realise I had ancestors in the area until I'd moved away. Then I spent a period in Sheffield, again without realising I had ancestors thereabouts. Now I live in Kent I can categorically state... (no, I'd better not!)

I only found out recently that a gt gt uncle was living directly behind a house I used to live in.

A lot of things can suddenly emerge by pure chance. I mention in my profile that half of my line is Polish. This only emerged in 2007. Before, I had no knowledge of my father. As my mother did not choose to mention him, I did not pursue it. However I fairly regularly glanced at an online version of the local newspaper from Chichester, though I had not lived there for many years. They introduced a spot for looking for old aquaintances. I did not notice it for some time, but then happened to look at it and found a picture of my mother, aunt and a cousin , together with another of myself at 1 year. My half sister had been told about me by our father, but did nothing till her mother had died, and then had tried to find me . She had limited information other than my and my mother's name (though not my unusual spelling - Jee) and the town of Chichester and a dance just outside Chichester. She had almost given up , but then, by chance I had happened to look on that particular section of the online paper. Now I have a sister (Canadian but both parents of Polish descent) I never knew existed.
Would make a good TV program, but if i had gone to them they would never have been able to trace who my father was, and so would have been unsuccessful. However pure chance, and determination by my sister, prevailed

Been away for a few days so only just caught up with this thread. It was cooler in France - perhaps we should have stayed there.

Hi Mike. We have exchanged messages in the past.

For anything 'Brummie', maps, directories, etc, then Mike is the.....'authority' to consult.;)

Greetings Mike and welcome.

History of Birmingham? Hm, wonder if you have heard of James Josiah Swann, thimblemaker. He was my gg grandfather and founded James Swann & Son thimbles. The firm was still in existence until a few years ago - though no longer in the family.
Hi Mike i think we might have a link as I am related to James Swann of Birmingham thimble fame.

Don't know if we met "in that previous life" Mike, but then I'm lousy at picking the old friends in new disguises. Whether or not, welcome to TD from me too. Even if you have no genealogy questions, if you just want to feel comfy and welcome it's the best place to be.

Hi Scribblingali

I'm the one related to James Josiah Swann rather than Mike. :)

His daughter Charlotte Florence Eliza Swann was my great grandmother. How do you connect?

Mike---what a story! By the way, I am half Polish also. Many Polish immigrants made their way to the States through Canada---that is why the Detroit area has a large Polish population. My great grandfather and a great uncle both found their way to the States that way.---Yeates
