On familysearch there is a baptism for one Gulielmus Ambrocius Dewson. His parents are Frederici and Annae Dewson.

I know that Frederici = Frederick and Annae = Anne. I also know that Gulielmus = William but for the life of me I can't work out what Ambrocius is.

Google just asks did I mean Ambrosius? could it just be a spelling mistake or is there such a name as Ambrocius?

Any thoughts welcomed.

It was a name at one stage. See http: //books.google.com.au/books?id=SrURAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA537&lpg=PA537&dq=Ambrocius+latin&source=bl&ots=wsIqNodjEE&sig=TqXV_QuTwyRj2A_bQ1qd2N43hjM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=w04HUov4G-PkiAfGloC4BA&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=Ambrocius%20latin&f=false

Ah found the birth registration now. It's translated, as Philippa says, as Ambrose. He must have dropped the name as there is no further mention of him anywhere.

Thank you both for taking the time to look for me.

Just entering Ambrocius without any other criteria, into Ancestry, returns quite a few but none in the UK.
