Voting USA

Nothing to do with the recent events in the USA.
I am sure that many years ago I found a document which had the party an ancestor belonged to or would vote for on it.
Is it added to any of the censuses?
Recently an external hard drive 'blew up' so anything on that is gone forever.

I think you're possibly referring to the Voter Registration records. I've got some for my family for California, but I don't know if any other states are available online.

I also had something like that. I remember not liking the lack of privacy, in showing everyone what party you voted for.

Did the government have the lists or was it local parties and would the lists been published at that time?

A quick search brought this up.
When you register to vote, some states and territories may ask about your political party affiliation. In states and territories with closed primaries, you can only vote in your party's primary election. In general elections, you can vote for any candidate regardless of your party affiliation.

I am sure that does not happen in the UK.

As with many things in the US, it depends on the time and place. Some old political parties were also social clubs, and subject to reports in newspapers. But yes, most states require one to register with a party to vote or stand for office.

I can't say I've ever seen them on any US census. I also can't think of a reason why it would be asked - it doesn't fit in with the purpose of taking the census

I have a feeling- not a memory , that's awol - I saw these listings on US census papers.
I have seen them from time to time. They appear on USA Voter Registration records which seem to be far from complete - possibly a work in progress.

I was only reminded about what I found because of the voting in the USA.
It was so long ago when I found the information and it was probably on the external hard drive that blew up.
