Today, 11th November 1918, is as we know Armistice Day. The day that on the 11th hour, of the eleventh month the treaty signed by the Allies and Germany came into effect. The author Arnold Bennet made this poignant observation regarding the celebrations that took place in London. “Last night I thought of lonely soldiers in that crowd. No one to talk to. But fear of death lifted from them”.
What makes this date even more memorable – and for all the wrong reasons – is that it was 24 years later in 1942 that 745 Jews were deported from Drancy internment camp to Auschwitz to face certain death.
We still have conflict the world over and it saddens me that the human race has still not learned.
