We have near us, at Molong, Fairbridge Farm, where many poor young British kids ended up, some abused, some came through it quite well, making great lives for themselves. Some reunited with family, some not so lucky. Some told their parents were dead, but weren't. On the main road to Molong we now have a memorial park dedicated to these kids that includes a memorial to those who served for Australia in conflicts.

Two of the children ended up in Canada through Barnardo's. :(

Although Ann stated in 1911 that she had 8 children, of which 6 were still living, she seems to have forgotten a couple. :( She actually had 11 children, of which 2 had died by 1911.

I am wondering if the form was completed by someone else who was not in full possession of the facts - or that Ann just copied what someone else had written down for her. :rolleyes:

There is another headstone alongside Mary's for Arthur Edward Goldsmith, husband of Margaret, died 14 Jul 1965. Death index has his age as 54.

The Arthur Goldsmith who died in 1959 was cremated, so no headstone unfortunately.

I thought the Fairbridge Farms were used by Barnardo. From what I know the children did better in Australia than they did in Canada but the numbers were far greater (those sent to Canada). Barnardo did like to rescue children who were not protestant, as he wanted to save them. He also liked to take children of criminals or to him those from dubious backgrounds.
I dont know why Barnardo has fascinated me so much, probably because I have children in my tree sent to Canada. I am glad times have changed
