What date please - St John's Football team - (Leeds ?).

This is a family photograph but I have no idea which boy (or adult) is the family member. It says on the back "the St John's Football team".
My grandad and his family all lived in Leeds so I think it must have been taken there.
Can anyone help with a date so I can hopefully identify my ancestor?

For a non-sports person I love photographs of early football teams
In one of my Albums I have a photo of a team from the 1920s here
(hopefully that worked ...)

I would say this was a bit earlier maybe 1890-1910 but I'm not really an expert

I think Huncamunca has a football team photo in one of her albums perhaps try to take a look at that one -- from memory it's earlier than mine

A couple of suggestions:

1) According to leedscarnegie.com: The principal ground at Cardigan Fields was used by the Leeds St John's Club which later became the football section of the Leeds Cricket Football and Athletic Club at the new ground in Headingley, now Headingley Carnegie Stadium. Therefore, an email to them may shed some light.

2) However, my first thought was that it could have been a Church team and there was - and still is - a St John's Church in Leeds. I cannot find an email address for them, but an old-fashioned letter might do the trick. St John the Evangelist, 23 New Briggate, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 8JD

You could always try and get the photo published in something like the Yorkshire Post yorkshirepost.co.uk/ (www in front) to see if anyone can recognise the team.

I originally thought it was a boys team from Richard Kemplay's Accadamy which was in St John's Place, near St John's Church but someone pointed out that there was no photography in 1831 when my ancestor was there!
However, the family lived in and near Briggate so I will try to contact the church as it seems likely there might be some connection there. The boys look mid teens, I think.
