Rose - 1899
William - 1908

On the 1911 census William and his wife say they are aged 55 and 53 respectively.

That would have made Mary Ann 50 when she had William born 1908.

Not believing that he was their son for a minute I sent for his birth certificate.

William was born on 19th May 1907 at 19 Oakeywell, where the family were living from 1891 onwards. His mother was Mary Ann Griffiths a domestic servant with no fathers name present on the certificate. So he was the illegitimate son of Mary Ann the daughter born in 1886.

What happened to Mary Ann - 1886, she only ever appeared on one census in 1891, by the time of the 1901 census she would probably have been out working. The only other time she was at home was to give birth to William.

Anyone fancy a challenge?

In 1901 the most likely seems to me to be Mary Griffith at 91 St John's Road, Dudley, a servant in the Whitmore(?) household - RG13/2746 fo109 p10.

But at the back of your mind, keep an eye on Mary Griffith, adopted daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Newton in Tipton - RG13/2737 fo103 p13.
