What Profession...again ?

Needs urgent follow up. I don’t have the resources. Well….not urgent but you know what I mean.
Louisa Elizabeth Stevenson 1898 Lambeth.
Marjorie Minnie Stevenson 1895 father Frederick Charles Stevenson and Minnie Stevenson
Frederick Stevenson and Minnie Day married St Giles Dec qtr 1884
My thoughts are that Minnie took off with Fred Ruff sometime around 1900

I don't know if you've seen this Terry but there is an entry on the WW2 Medals Issued to Merchant Seaman on Ancestry, for Frederick Ruff DOB 12 Sep 1898. You can download the image for free from TNA. I know you said he changed his year of birth on occasion so I'm pretty sure it's his. There is a handwritten note on it which I think says says 'Ribbons issued in UK ....? to? Australia 16.12.47'.

In 1901 a Frederick Ruff is with his wife Emily and daughter Dorothy G. E Ruff in Islington. He is a railway clerk. He is born 1874 and Emily is born Yorkshire, Kirkburton.
Perhaps the occupation could be ‘binder’ as in book binder, keeping all railway records in order.
Minnie could be her nick name. Just thinking out loud.
Dorothy is Dorothy Gertrude, I’m sure I found a Gertrude Ruff in New Zealand.

Well, he is still a railway clerk in 1911. No more children, still with Emily.
Unless of course he had little Fred with Minnie Stevenson on the side
His father was also Frederick, a railway accountant. 1911. Stands to reason you would keep the name rolling on.

I had trouble finding what happened to Frederick's first wife Emily Mary Turner who he ran out on in 1931. Finally found her.

She took up with (can't find any marriage and 1939 census says she was single and going under the name of Reeves) Charles Adrian John Reeves.

Looks like she had 3 children with Charles. Although all the children were born with the Ruff surname and MMN Turner.

Emily and the 3 children were killed on 19th April 1941 in a bombing during WW2.

Emily's death is registered twice once under Ruff and again under Reeves.

Civilian war deaths for Essex. They are also on the CWGC under civilian war dead.

I have sent for his first marriage certificate from 1925, it should be despatched this Wednesday, should be able to find out who he says his father was on that one.
Well I've had the certificate and a lot of help that has given me.

Frederick was 23 and a quarter master in the merchant forces.

His father was Frederick Ruff, deceased, Sergent Major.

 :headbang:

Looks like he was the son of Matthew and Mary Ruff nee Roberts who were married in 1887 in Church Stretton, Shropshire.

The address given on admission looks like Ouhack.

This family can be found living at Outrack, Church Pulverbatch, Shropshire in 1911, so not him.
Yes it’s Outrack, Matthew was my great grandad . I’ve been searching for Mary’s maiden name, I thought it was Robert’s.
