where is Alice buried?

Our very own Cornish Maid
My great granma, Mary Alice Copley, died in September 1915, at home in Arnold, Notts. She was C of E, and appears to have attended the church of St Mary the Virgin (that's where the last child's baptism & burial took place, in 1900).

We're going up to Derbyshire for a weekend in December (taking the grandkids' presents) and I'd like to search for the grave. I've been promised a trip over to Arnold - on condition that I know where to go!!! I've found the church thanks to Google, but ...

... my question is ... those of you who know the Nottingham area, is it likely that she is buried in the churchyard, or is there a graveyard where most people were sent after the service? Is there any way I can find out in advance where she is?

All advice gratefully received!

Jane

WOW! I've answered my own question! Had a brainwave this morning and googled the Arnold cemeteries, saw they're run by Gedling Borough Council. So I rang them. Spoke to a lovely lady who couldn't help but said she'd pass it on. This was around 12 noon.

At 5pm the phone rang - another lovely lady, from the Cemeteries Dept - not only has she found Mary Alice, she has told me who she's buried with and exact instructions how to find the grave. If I'd been able to go on a weekday, she would have taken me. As it's a Saturday - she will leave an arrow on the path for me!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

It is great when you find a helpful person at a cemetery. The world needs more of them :) Enjoy your visit on Saturday.

I had the same kind of help looking for the burial of my great grandmother. She lived in Streatham and I knew her date of death. I googled cemeteries in the area and phoned Streatham Park Cemetery with no real idea if she was buried there. The lady there gave me the grave number and said if I called in she would show me where it was. It is, apparently, a double plot paid for by her daughter, and the second plot is still available!

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present the grave of Mary Alice Copley, nee Brown! (the headstone is for the next grave, but you can see the sprayed-on "marker")

A bit late, I know - it's taken me all this time to work out how to make the photo acceptable in size!

Wonderful news Jane, and I'm not in the least surprised you had such help. I was in Cropwell Bishop a few years ago and had found 2 generations of x g grandparents. A local resident came up and, seeing the family names on the 8 headstones I had found, pointed me to where there were another 6.
