Who are they?

This is the back of a silhouette that my friend Tim has sent me. Whilst the first names are not too hard to read, I would be grateful for a translation of the surnames. The silhouette dates from about 1790.

I don't agree with what Tim says they are so I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks.

Thank you @WelchRegLost and @Archie's Mum - you've cracked it! :D

Just had a quick rummage on the interwebby and a John Henry Greville SMYTH was a naturalist and collector of specimens. He was born with the surname of UPTON and, when his grandmother died in 1852, he took on the surname of SMYTH.

I am now going to delve into Somerset to see what I can discover to send to Tim.

Thank you! ():-)

Florence Smyth, sister of John Jarret Smyth and Hugh Smyth married John Upton. Her son was Thomas who in turn was the father of John Henry Greville Upton Smyth. Florence, John and Hugh’s parents were Thomas Smyth and Jane Whitchurch…….Family Search tree.
Now back to save the burnt dinner

John Upton died in Yorkshire in 1832 and left an extensive will mentioning his wife Florence and son Thomas

Florence reverted to Smyth and died at Ashton Court, Long Ashton in 1852. Her will mentions a deceased grandson Thomas, nephews and servants and connections in Sedburgh, Yorks.

Thank you so much!

I had been having a read of such. Very convoluted family!

I have put all the information together and sent it across to Tim who is chuffed to little mintballs and thanks you all for your help. ():-)

Bit late to the party, but did you see this notice which appeared in many newspapers of the day - this from the Morning Herald of the 26th August 1852.

Thanks @AnnB :) I found something similar but will forward it on.

Tim has bought the silhouette based on our findings, so it adds to the pot!
