Who is Mary ?

Still looking at those Tortola Pickerings . . . found this nice survey of Tortola in 1798, commissioned by Isaac Pickering of Fox Lease, Hampshire:

Rats :( Who on earth was Mary? Mary Mary Quite Contrary?

Out of curiosity I looked to see if there were any Mary Contrarys in Ancestry and FamilySearch and there are! Even a Mary Mary Quite Contrary in the aptly named 'Insanitree' on Ancestry. But she is too old to be Joanne's Mary.;)

Oh this had me laughing and spitting out the coffee I'd just sipped

I think I must be on intimate terms with every Pickering that ever had anything to do with Mr Googleo_O
I feel a bit like that too AM, but it has been very interesting along the way. I keep thinking I've found 'something', only to find that someone else has already mentioned it - and I keep getting side-tracked, which doesn't help

I did find an interesting site with mailing lists and all sorts of other info at
http://www.
iukgenweb.org/index.php/british-overseas-territories/british-virgin-islands
but Joanne may already know of it.

I have gone back to the Hetheringtons in case we can pin down where Richard might have been as a young man. Had his parents moved to Burton?

Richard Hetherington's parents were William Heddrington and Ann Johnson both buried in Tunstall Churchyard. There are three other graves also in this churchyard, Richard's daughter Elizabeth Robinson,Ellen Rippon and ? Dorothy Hetherington. His wife Mary is buried in Thornton in Lonsdale with an apparently long eulogy. I have "long shots" of these graves.

Sudden thought... I wonder if this "long eulogy" has her maiden name on it !

Ok have heard back from 3rd cousin in England who tried to find the lady who originally had Mary "Pickering" as married to Richard Hetherington. Unfortunately no luck so they have either passed away, as i was told, or are in care.

Any luck with the cemetery Joanne or have you not put out feelers?
I'd phone, but our phone is U/S!!!

Looking back at this thread again, I see that Hollins Farmhouse, Burneside, Kendal - Richard's possible birthplace - is currently for rent on Rightmove.(property website) Lots of pictures that you might like to see!

When I first looked at this this thread I found an old Rootschat post from a taupinrainbow (Gordon) who had been told that Mary Pickering was the daughter of Isaac Pickering and Sarah Lupton in Pennsylvania - but he could find no proof of this. Is this the same report you had?

Googling around it seems that this Mary died in Bucks Co in 1787 (from Lupton genealogy website in rootsweb)

Gordon got a bit cranky with me when i could'nt confirm Mary Pickering, we shared info but have not heard from him in a while

My Richard Hetherington b1737 ? married a Mary ??. They had 7 children one of whom is buried in Tortola. Mary died in 1790 and is buried in Thornton in Lonsdale, Lancashire.
I am unable to find any record of Richard and Mary marrying although other branches have Richard marrying a Mary Pickering, dates which do NOT fit in.
Thanks Joanne

I'm thick as two bricks! :headbang: Re above question it has just dawned on me that Mary Pickering was the SECOND wife of Richard Hetherington. She died in 1921 in the hurricane but all my cousins and i had her listed as the mother of Richards children. Still don't know who the first Mary was though :(
