I'm looking for information on the above named chap. In our local cemetery there is a monument erected to him by his 'Brother Jockey's'

The inscription reads

William Garnet Evans
who was accidentally killed at Epsom
May 31st 1905
Aged 18 Years

In the midst of life we are in death

This Monument was erected by his Brother Jockeys as a token of
Love and Esteem

I have tried googling but Mr google doesn't like me, a bit like my memory, they both hide things from me o_O​

This is an article in the Teesdale Mercury, from the little I could see he was killed on Derby Day, the OCR is a big mess so I can't tell you the name of the trainer or horse, but maybe you can find another newspaper article ...
 
There is a write-up of the whole incident including the inquest and verdict in the Surrey Mirror of Tuesday 6th June 1905.

There is also a paragraph about the 'white marble monument' in the racing pages of the Nottingham Evening Post of Monday 21st August 1905.

There is a William G Evans s/o Charles (tailor b1855 Knighton) and Emma (b1856 Knighton) in Station Road Knighton on the 1891 census RG12/4582/6/5
 
William Garnett Evans was baptised in Knighton on 19/10/1886 son of Charles tailor and Sarah Ann of Wilcome (?) Street.

The original census for 1891 does say Emmao_O

From the Nottingham Evening Post 21st August 1905
A monument in white marble has been erected in Knighton Cemetery the memory the late William Garnet Evans, who met his untimely death at Epsom on Day in May last. The inscription is “In the midst of life we are death.” The additional lettering informs reader that the monument stands as a token of love and esteem from his brother jockeys.

I have found William on the 1901 census RG13 piece 1537 folio 44 page 8

I can make out the Training Establishment bit but can't make out the first word. Can someone take a look please.

Lordship Training Establishment. :)

Edited to add: Lordship Stud is still in existence today. ;)

Chimp, they are actually on Twitter. Mostly updates on bloodstock, but you could contact them if you so wished.
 
Poor old Charles didn't have much luck with his family.

Sarah Ann his wife died January 20th 1890 aged 34 years
Kate their daughter died June 2nd 1900 aged 21 years
William their son died May 31st 1905 aged 18 years

Charles married Emily Abley on 4th December 1891 and his bad luck seems to have followed him. :eek:

Their son Ralph Gordon Evans died August 28th 1911 age 13
Another son Thomas Arnol was Killed in Action France July 31st 1917 aged 20 years.
