William Soper Hayward

Intriguingly another SOPER/HAYWARD connection. According to an Ancestry Family Tree, George HAYWARD born c1783/6 in Deal (according to census records) married a Grace SOPER at Deal on 18 April 1803. I cannot find a baptism for him in Deal - could he perhaps be a brother of William? As has already been said, more questions than answers at the moment.

Janet
Hi Janet, There is a Grace Soper born in Cornwall (Giles in the Heath) May 1785 with a father William and mother Elizabeth. Which would fit the names of William, but I would have thought if his mother was Grace he would have called one of his daughters Grace. cheers and thanks again.

If one was in Kent would they be able to view the papers (wills) etc? And if so would would it be at Maidstone or Canterbury?
When I was last in England I tried finding the father of Amelia Haywards son (my great grandfather) Frederick William Hall On the cert it had Hayward and no father. I thought there may be bastard reports, but could not find anything. cheers Rosemary (Amelia is the daughter of William Soper Hayward).

The new library at Maidstone is where the archive is. I am sure they would help with this or I could have a look next time I go over there. I have been dipping in and out of this thread a bit so bear with me. Did I read somewhere earlier that Rosemary already has Elizabeth Haywood's Will?

The bundle of deeds for 10 Nelson Street, at Kent Archives includes a copy of Charles Hayward's will (1826).

Document EK/U137/T3 at Kent Archives is an 1853 'Conveyance of a moiety of premises at 10 Nelson St, further to the last will and testament of Elizabeth Hayward and her heirs' so Elizabeth's will must have been proved before that. I can't find either Charles or Elizabeth's will in the PCC wills index on the National Archives website or in the East Kent wills index here:

http://www.
kentarchaeology.ac/ekwills_a/

which though may not have tried all spelling variations.

Checking that bundle of deeds may be the easiest way of finding out when and where Elizabeth's will was proved. As mentioned before, the 'Abstract of title' (documents T7 and T8) should summarise the key points of the earlier documents and so might be the place to start.

I have been trying to find out more about William SOPER of Deal/Margate, Carpenter with little success I might add. Intriguingly (yet again) there is a baptism at Deal St Leonard on 7 December 1806 of a William SOPER son of William & Gertrude SOPER, a marriage at Deal on 18 January 1806 of a William SOPER & Gertrude VENNER and a burial on 25 January 1837 at Margate Zionist church of a Gertrude SOPER, aged 52 - could William snr be the Carpenter of Deal/Margate? William jnr looks to be in the 1841 census of Margate and an Infant Schoolmaster married to a Mary with children William, Grace, Mary Ann, Emily and Hannah and by 1851 is living in Chelsea and described as a London City Missionary - nary a Carpenter in sight! But there is a William SOPER born c1787 St Giles Devon in the 1851 census of Margate who is a Retired Builder - could he have been described as a Carpenter in 1826? According to his second marriage in 1838 at Margate, his father was also a William SOPER, Builder. More speculation, which has already been suggested, but could he have been Elizabeth SOPER's brother? There is another bundle of papers at Kent Archives dated 1828 1839 entitled William SOPER of Margate Personal Affairs which could be interesting.

Now I have probably confused everyone with more information and given myself a headache into the bargain, I will retire and ponder further.

William and Gertrude Soper moved around a lot, to judge from baptisms of their children in non-conformist records*. These are the ones I've found so far:

Deal Independent Chapel (RG 4/874)
John b & bapt 1808
Robert b & bapt 1810
Kitty b & bapt 1811
Elizabeth b & bapt 1814

Zion Chapel, Last Lane, Dover (Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion formerly Presbyterian) (RG 4/922)
Mary Ann b.1815 (sorry didn't check baptism date)
Kate b. & bapt 1817
Grace b & bapt 1818

Independent Chapel in the Corn Market, Sandwich (RG 4/2427)
Hannah b & bapt 1821 (dau of William and Gertrude Soper formerly Venner; father a grocer)
Thomas bapt 1823 (son of William and Gertrude Soper formerly Venner; father a cabinet maker).

Margate Zion Chapel (RG 4/1809)
Grace b.1824 bapt 1825
Sarah b. & bapt 1826
(some of William jr's children were baptised here too)

*These records are now on Ancestry as well as on BMD Registers/The Genealogist.

Thanks Guys, the only will I have is the one of William Soper Hayward which mentions about his daughters and their husbands. Have a friend staying at the moment so can't spend time here. Off to the hotpools this morning and Miranda (bird centre for migratory birds). cheers Rosemary
