I know there are some there, digitised, but I cannot seem to find out where and how to access them. I'm not very good at catalogue searching.

Thanks in advance.

If you go to
Code:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/location/1986340?region=England
and scroll down past the bit where you can enter the name etc., then you'll come to a bit that says 'Filter by Collection' and that's a list of all the collections they hold for England (I presume you want England) There is a section headed 'Probate and Court' - hope that's what you are after :)

I wondered if there was a Will for William Upperton, Sussex, around 1670s ish.

There are some on-line Sussex wills at
Code:
http://www.sussex-opc.org/index.php?t=will&no=14
but no Uppertons :(

And there's a Wiki page about Sussex Probate Records at
Code:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Sussex_Probate_Records

Thank you lovely, the Sussex Wills Depository run by SFHG has lots of lovely Wills transcribed and they are free to members. Unfortunately there isn't one for William. FMP shows three held at West Sussex Record Office for a very nice looking candidate, but it will be ages and ages before I can get there again, and the charge for copies is HOOOOOOGE. Thanks for looking Ann, I will have to get on with the vast amount of stuff that has come to light in the last couple of weeks since I posted James the Second and take a patience pill!!

Thanks AnnB.........that is a handy page!! I didn't find anything other than a gazillion William Bownesses born in England, but in the one and only Scottish census of 1841, he says he was born ca 1771 in "England"......gee, thanks!! CUL or WES obviously, but not a trace for the right William. Huncamunca found that the one we thought was the right one died in the US in 1797, durn it.
