Puts the Heart into Hertfordshire
My ancestor, who was in and out of the workhouse around 1911, is written several times as surname (c) first names. What would the (c) mean? No one else has it in their name, or in fact any other letter in brackets. It was not part of his name
 
I think that it stands for 'casual' - people who were given accommodation for just one or two nights.

Wow, I did not know about the "casual poor", and that he might have been homeless or similar. That sheds a whole new light on things. Thank you
