Hi John

I think I am going to try clicking on new posts followed by recent posts when logged in as Chimp suggested. This gives recent posts with the unread ones in bold.

It does mean an extra click though and I doubt if I would ever have worked out how to do this on my own. :oops: And may well continue just to log in and out as before....

I think it might be good to have this recent post button on the bar when first logging in , either in place of or as well as the new posts button.

Just my thoughts. :):):)

So John, we others will just keep wondering who you are among the guests daily, I tried it after our security co. knocked me out of forum, found it annoying if I wanted to reply or post something.
'tis the beauty of this forum, freedom.......
matters not, still nice to have you here. ;)

Yes, you're right, Chimp. And I thought your first posting here was just to blind us with science......;)

It's not exactly intuitive, though, is it, and it's jolly hard to see why it was set up that way in the first place. o_O

Exactly! You have well over 1,700 messages and Ma-dotcom has many more than that. The questions you might ask yourselves include:
  1. Do I know any other forums which work in the same way?
  2. If not, why not?
  3. Are there things about the way this forum works which confuse or put off members who are more 'occasional' than me?

When Doug and I set the forum up a little over 3 years ago, we did not want to use vBulletin software, which is what some forums use. We had experienced problems in the Admin section whilst using it, which made management of forums with that software extremely difficult on many occasions.

Therefore, we looked around for an alternative.

This forum is run on XenForo software and, apart from errors that were server problems and totally unconnected to XenForo, we have nothing but praise for how it operates.

Yes, it took us a while to get to grips with how it worked - both from the member and Admin perspectives - but I would not change it at all.

As it was a totally new way of working, time was taken to explain how to find one's way around (see here) - it helped us in Admin as well as members - and I know that, if I have not undertaken a particular manoeuvre for a while, I will still refer to it.

There are many other forums run on the XenForo software - and also forums that are run on other software programmes. Each is different, with either many or few levels of use.

Meanwhile, the explanation that @Chimp has provided is very comprehensive and huge thanks to him for providing it.

perhaps if I had taken the time to read this I might have known what I was doing:oops: found my way about but maybe it would have been easier:reading: love it just as it is
