Just can't get this word.......

Any ideas welcome as to what the word is third line down, second word in, please. It's from a will of 1773 if that helps.

I can read at the end of the second line and the first word of the next line:

and also to Catherine my ? twenty pounds for mourning.......

Did brother Samuel have a daughter Catherine? Niece?
I know it looks nothing like it but it does have an 'i'. :(

No idea, trying to connect these people. I found him in the burial records of the East Barnet church that my Grove's are buried at an Isaac Grove buried in 1775. Found his will and am trying to see if there is a connection to my Grove's.
Edited to add: He's not in the Monumental Inscriptions, though I don't think they are complete.

I think so Sue and I did think of niece but whichever way I looked at it I couldn't see that it read niece. Though having said that if you look at the M in Mourning I think it starts with an N, so maybe it is niece though if so the i is in the wrong place. But they may have spelt it different way back then.

The 'M' and the 'N' are very similar. The 'N' being a pen stroke shorter. Then there is the 'i'. So I just stabbed at 'niece'.
Maybe he did what I always do....the 'e' and 'i' back to front. I do it all the time. :rolleyes:

The first letter looks the same as first letter in mourning, and his wife's name (is she Mary?) My guess it starts with 'M' not much help, sorry.

Looking at the first letter in Brother which shares this curlicue, the 2nd word after the curly bit looks like an 'r' then 'w' i'nc/e. My first thought was twin but the 't' doesn't fit.
Sis can you snip any other words with that similar beginning?

I thought that at first Lizzy, but the M has a couple of extra stokes.

Can't find any other word similar. There's a half page of another persons will, I'll Take a look at that.

All that did for me was to make me think that the word starts with an N. Yes, No?
This is from the other will and I have underlined the word that I know says 'name'. Well that's what I think. There's no other word similar in this will.

Late here but will take a shot (nice writing btw)......what is the first name of the Grove on the 4th line. The first letter is darn near the same. On second look, that is the first name of his wife......she is sole Executrix. And yes, it could be "niece" cuz it is the only word I could think of that makes sense.

Btw......see those funny squiggles at the end of line 2 and 3?? Long ago I mentioned that if there was a space that someone could add a letter or two, the clerk put these sort of squiggles in to fill up the space. they are not words. Not that anyone thought they were, but was happy to point out what the clerks did.

Night ladies...hope you get it. If I had more of the will to look at, I might have been able to get it. And in the second bit of writing below, that is definitely "name".........they make the E's like a hard-boiled egg with the top sliced.......silly comparison but it works for me, lol.

Another odd fact.....I typed Wills for eons and they used the same wording for about 400 years......just changed in the last 30 or so. I like the old "give, devise and bequeath" wording, lol.

Yes they are very similar Heather, the name is Mary. Here's the comparison, Mary is the first one and why I think it is not an M and possibly an N. Can anyone else see that the M in Mary has that extra squiggle (for want of a better word).

Maybe we will never work it out. I think I will see if I can find them all on Ancestry and hopefully that will help.

It does have an E on the end, just like Catherine.......but at a wild guess I keep thinking that 2nd letter is a W or V perhaps? I give up, lol. Off to bed.

To me both Mourning and the other word seem to start with the same letter.

But you all know how useless I am at reading this sort of writing.

OK now you've cut off the first part I can see that it could well be an M. But Mr Cleverclogs;) what's the rest of the word please?:D
