Thanks Genie1, but at this stage I'm rather inclined to think it starts with an M or N.:)

Run this around the block and see if the wheels fall off ?

"fourty" (incorrect spelling) pounds could be "twenty" pounds ?

    The more I look, the more I think it's "twenty" ! :)

Another vote for Niece here.....but isn't it odd that he hasn't given her surname? As in all the PCC wills I've seen, the other people mentioned have been given their surnames, even when he names his wife, he gives her surname. But supposing he has two nieces called Catherine? He doesn't say she is Samuel's daughter. Probably just an oversight, but these wills are usually so precise.

I keep coming back to this. I agree, I felt there was something 'incomplete', and Ann is right about the lack of surname.

I agree that it looks the same as the first letter in mourning but I can't think what the word will be.

As Catherine immediately follows the bequest to Samuel, if she was his daughter it could be that no surname would be considered as being needed. Women, especially minors, would not necessarily be considered important enough.

    Just a thought.... :)

If you still need it, another vote for Niece, but spelled Neice.

Thank you everyone for your help with this. Niece I will go with.
@MollyMay in post #21 has found an interesting baptism, thank you. So I will try and find the rest of the family to confirm or not that this family is anything to do with my Groves.
