Do you think I have the right man?

Worthing Herald 6th January 1956
Also awarded the M.B.E. is Mr Alfred Wyness Nile Clark, of Ashacre-lane, an Assistant Principal Clerk to the Board of Inland Revenue, Worthing. He was born in a sailing ship in Valparaiso Harbour. His father, a sea captain, took him round the world one and a half times before he was five. The name of the ship was the Nile - hence Mr Clark's unusual third name. Joining the Inland Revenue when he was 17, he has served in it for 43 years and is in the assessments division. Why didn't he take up the sea as his career ? “My father said he would shoot me if I wanted to go to sea,” he recalled. “It was very hard life - but it never seemed to do my father any harm.” Mr Clark came to Worthing with his family in 1936 to live, and began working here in 1950, when the Goring offices were opened. A keen sportsman, he played rugby in his younger days for the Civil Service first team, Brighton and Bradford, but later gave this up in favour of golf and is this year's captain of Hill Barn Golf Club. He has three children. His elder daughter, Mrs Brenda Roberts, went to the High School for Girls, passed her B.Sc. at London, and is married a Colonial official in Lagos, Nigeria. His younger daughter, now Mrs Shirley Ely, having married in October, is also an old High School girl, and recently gained her B.A. degree at Liverpool. Martin, aged 17 is at the High School for Boys, and recently won a scholarship to Peterhouse, Cambridge.

Andrew Auld Clark was born 29th September 1847 (not 1848 as most of his subsequent records show) in the parish of Dundonald, Ayrshire.

Parents Thomas Clark and Mary Robertson.

Thomas is listed as a Policeman in the birth register. He's a Railway official by 1883 in the marriage certificate of Andrew Clark and Agnes McCallum.

There's a parish record in Rerrick, Kirkbudbright in 1842 of the marriage of Thomas Clark, servant, to Mary Robertson (25th February)

1841 Scotland census - a Thomas Clark (24) is an agricultural labourer in Rerrick, staying at the "Auckenfad Outhouse" with four other males.

We (well you and I know) that Andrew Auld Clark was buried in Knighton Old cemetery on 6th February 1934. I have no location for his burial.

As you have seen by the picture I sent you of his wife's headstone, it has been toppled as it was unsafe. It is also partly buried. Not being able to see what is written on all sides of the stone doesn't help. Maybe his name is on the portion that is buried.

Back in March I was looking for the burial of my little sister. I contacted Powys Environmental health (burials department) and a lovely lady, Janet, found the plot for me.

I have sent Janet an email asking where Andrew is buried. Hopefully she will get back to me with the location in a couple of days.

Andrew Auld Clark's abode at time of death was 26, High Street, Knighton.

26 today is run by Price's, they sell furniture, carpets and cloths. Prior to the Price's it was owned by Prince and Pugh, Ironmongery, but that was only after Pugh joined Prince. Back when Andrew was there it was just Prince's Ironmongery. So it looks like Andrew worked for Prince's.

Thanks Chimp. I had assumed he was living with his daughter Jane. Would he really be working in his 80s? Is it possible he was renting a flat above the shop or something?

I have just been informed that there was a flat above the shop, so you could be right.

He had possibly been living with his daughter Jane.

!n 1939 there seems to have been 2 flats at 26, High Street. Jane (FMP have her transcribed as Jean K Goodwin) in the one and in the other was, Alfred W Goodwin and his wife Mary L.

Find my past have the birth date for Alfred W Goodwin as 2nd November 1860 and his wife Mary L as 15th July 1911. (I think Mary L's surname had been White prior to marrying Alfred)

Alfred's birth is a miss-transcription (I can understand how the mistake was made) it should actually be 2nd November 1910. (He lied too, he was born in Dec qtr 1911 in Knighton) Probably added a year on to appear older than his wife. So a birth of 2nd November 1911.

Alfred W Goodwin (Alfred William Goodwin) was the son of W.E.T. Goodwin and Jane Kerr Clark.

I can find no burial for Alfred or Mary Goodwin in Knighton.

There is this death registration.

Tried ringing today but the person I was after wasn't at his desk. I will give it another go on Monday.
