Do we have anything more specific on "mystery children" than b. New York and year? NYC has 5 boroughs. Then there are lots of counties and towns big and small in the rest of the state. FS has unindexed record images, but I'm hesitant to wade through them for each county. No luck in the 1875 State census - at least, not as indexed. Will do some more later as time permits.
I really question this one... she was born in Georgia or Tennessee... She seemed to have several "husbands" so I don't think she ever married.When she married in 1839 she already had one child named Edward Sanford Hawkins... she had several others to different men over the years .Its on a tree on Ancestry...I searched her with Mary Ann Polly Hawkins Tree owner is Stewart James ..I'll message you
The children first appearance in "my" records is on board the "John Elder", 15 July 1879, emigrating with the family from London to Melbourne: But I don't think they'll appear in an 1875 US census - Sam & Minnie sailed (London-Melbourne) 21 December 1874 on their exploratory trip. Was there an 1871 US Census? How do I search for Deaths in New York, c1871-1874? I've got a feeling that Mary Ann "Polly" died - perhaps in childbirth. There's a niggle in my head that tells me I've seen there were 4 male children, one of whom was dead ... but where did I see it?? In the US, the census years end in zero, starting in 1790. The first one with every person in each household named is 1850. Some states held census in years ending in five, so that's why I looked at 1875. Vitals are usually held by counties or towns, with church records very hit and miss. Where the Masons Anglicans per chance? Or do we know? I have a few places to check, but may get caught by the server outage. If so, we'll see you Friday.
After a pretty thorough search of my go-to New York sites, I didn't see any records that fit. A few looked promising, but the dates don't work. I will see if I can find any Methodist church records in the right time frame. Fingers crossed - but don't hold your breath.
The only possible Methodist records are held on A..., to which I don't have a sub at the moment, and would require a trip to the library, which won't happen this week, at least. Found it! I do love Australian Death Certs - so much information! (Although its accuracy depends on the Informant's knowledge - George has got his father's age wrong for the 2nd marriage) But he believes that there was a 4th child born in New York. And that father first married age 35y. (This was sent to me by my new-found "twin" in Australia) Jane

I've tried Mason/Hawkins/Polly/Mary A/Samuel - 1868 +/- 2yrs. ZILCH - NADA - NOWT. Either they didn't marry, or it wasn't New York. (Although I'm not sure that they would necessarily be Methodist - it was Minnie's family (GILROY) that were the Wesleyans. Don't know about Sam's (MASON). Jane
If I have the right Sam he was baptised 1837 at St Peters Leeds to William and Hannah. So C of E I guess. Do you have details of William and Hannah already? Or I can post what have found. Also this Samuel's birth is after start of civil registration.
Does Samuel have a middle initial? i found a Samuel G Mason marrying a Charity P. Daniel April 21 1865, but it doesn't give much more information. Nothing else in the Methodist records... The records do show membership to the church so I looked for Minnie and never found her either! I do think if he married Polly it would have been somewhere other than New York as she seemed to stay further South.

Charles died and then they split up or she died....just saying
Also.. If Samuel married Polly in 1868 she would have been 52 years old......Something does not add up.
