Hilfield again ... Baptism register

Sorry I wasn't here in your hour of need

You may have your chance yet, only 2 and a bit pages to go, but who knows what stumbling blocks there are?

Here's my next one...o_O... in 1945

yeah, hmmm, I'm sure his name isn't Joseph Batking, but now that's in my head I am struggling to see anything else :D

P.S. Huncamunca, hope your Heritage Open Day went well.

All I can say is that I expect that the SSF stands for Society of St Francis again. Any way that you could obtain a list of the priests for the correct dates?

Like Arthur, I thought the surname was Batting, but can find nothing to prove it. I have tried everything I can think of, including the newspapers, and names such as Batling (most of the 'names' I tried don't even exist!!). I've had a look at the Hilfield Friary site in the hope that they may have some sort of link to past priests, but there doesn't seem to be any such link. You could always e-mail them and ask......:)

Yes, thank you everyone! I also tried Batting & Batling and various other things that don't exist too. You don't think that could be an 'R' where he didn't stop his pen in time, do you?

I tried the SSF website and the Hilfield Friary site too but they don't seem to have anything online. I am considering the best approach in an email to one or both of the sites, perhaps I should go direct to Hilfield first.

In the meantime I have sent my transcripts to the Dorset OPC coordinator, I hope he won't mind adding in a correction later if I can find the answer (I was so pleased to have finished I actually forgot that this issue was still outstanding:rolleyes: ).

Can I just add my thanks to everyone who answered all my questions on the Sydling St Nicholas baptism register, and on the Hilfield census and PRs, your experience, opinions, and kindness is much appreciated.

Since I am finding the transcription process quite therapeutic (handwriting interpretation issues notwithstanding) I am probably going to need your help yet again. I am staying in the geographical area, and will probably start on Frampton next. I'll start a new thread for that once I get going.

Thank you :) 8(:-)

... Now you've said that I have a feeling I have come across him before (perhaps in the Sydling St Nicholas Baptism register? definitely not in the Hilfield baptisms) so I probably should have been able to work it out

Umm, going through my files again I discover Watkins Charles Roberts all over the place (esp. Hilfield), so I definitely should have been able to work that one out by myself I feel ashamed

a sort-of update, I have heard back from the Friary but the Archivist is on holiday, hopefully in about 2 weeks I will have an answer :) .

In the meantime, the Hilfield transcripts are uploaded to the opcdorset site
