By golly I think you've got it @Chimp!!!! That makes sense now I read it again. I guess it comes down to punctuation or the lack thereof. I was reading it that Robert Bonar resides with... when they are saying that Margaret Bonar resides with the pauper. I was thinking the first letter was a capitol letter, duh! Thank you very much, it was driving me slightly nuts!!! Overthinking as usual!I can't make out that first letter but it looks like ?auper.
Could it be a 'P' as in resides with Pauper and Margaret Docherty
His name is at the top of the page. It Margaret's husband applying. So poor old pauper doesn’t even deserve a name.![]()
OK, fret not @Archie's Mum and @Chimp. Margaret Bonar is the wife of the pauper who is Thomas Rice (remember Scotland use maiden names a lot) and Robert Bonar is Margaret's dad. That leaves Margaret Docherty (maiden name again) who is wife to Robert Bonar and mother to Margaret Bonar married name Rice. Margaret Doherty married, name Bonar, was dead by the time Thomas Rice applied for help.I know, sad in'it
and 'dead'.... that's a bit finalcould have said died.
Their grammar leaves a lot to be desired. not sure if they're saying she resides with a pauper and someone who's dead. or if they're saying Margaret Bonar is dead.
This one was from Ancestry. But the record set is North Lanarkshire Poor Law records only, I'm afraid Jane.May I ask - where can I view these Scottish Poor Law records?
Jane

P.S. Margaret Bonar is alive and well at this time.
As clear as mud, let me read that again......
Not sure I have this right, but here goes...
Thomas Rice was asking for help, he was living with his wife Margaret Rice (nee Bonar). They are telling us that Margaret Rice (nee Bonar) was the daughter of Robert Bonar and his wife Margaret Docherty, then telling us that Margaret Docherty (Roberts wife and Margret Rice's mother) was dead ?
