I slept well on this, hardly thought about my Mary at all.
    PERMISSIONS TO MARRY
    Charles Nye, Argyle
    Eliza Tucker, Free (ship)
    Permission date 20 Jan 1842

    Charles Nye, Argyle
    Mary Adams, Garland Grove
    Permission date 31 Oct 1843

    MARRAIGES
    Charles Nye, constable ex Argyle
Mary Adams 15 Jan 1844 (this is Mary Nye who died in 1891)

    Charles Nye
    Mary Fleming 10 Oct 1854
This is Mary Wilson/Fleming per Elizabeth and Henry
and they the parents of Charles NAPE born 1855.
The only thing I have to figure out is if the Charles Nye who married Mary Fleming is one and the same as Charles Nye from the Argyle. Otherwise I am looking at a bigamist.

Mary's occupation was 'cook' at that time, sorry to be unclear

I think there are altogether to-oo many Mary's in the ball park. Next time could you please find a 'Seraphina' or 'Hepzibah' or some other catchy name?

    edit:
glad someone slept well, still we both came back to same problem, the above posted while I keyed.
bigamist? they were out there but wouldbe nice to think our law upholders upheld it eh?
this may be one of those scenarios which unravel over time, especially after another new comer sees your post & joins in :D

Thanks for clearing up the 'cook' bit.
For now I think I will let dear Mary rest in peace. It was interesting trying to figure out who she was. When we get back down to Tasmania I may pay my respects, Mary. Whether you were the quiet Mary or the rebel rouser, it matters not now. Sleep well.

    Hello,
My name is Melanie Nye, I’ve been on and off doing my family tree for over 20 years. For some reason tonight I decided to try my Nye family again after being stuck for so long I pretty much gave up. I am a direct descendant of Charles Nye, his son Charles whom they say is Nape on his birth certificate is my Great great grandfather, family history tells me he ran away from his violent or strict father as a young teen and coming to the mainland joined one of the first circus’s in Australia, he then married Sarah McLean and had many children In country NSW near Hay. My Great grandfather Archibald being one of them. what I don’t know is any information on his parents Charles Nye and Mary Fleming. I am stuck but I want to know more than ever why it is so hard to find this information. We are planning a family reunion after the Covid isolation and I’d love to have more information than I did 10 years ago.
please tell me you are still on here ..
    Yours truly M Nye

Hello Melanie.. lovely to meet you.
As mentioned in post #1 I found a random photo of Mary in a book and decided to find all I could of her. She is not related in any way but she fascinated me. I would still like to find out more about her now that we have heard from a descendant. Would love to help you any way I/we could. I’m sure I still have the book, not too sure but will have a search around in the next few days. In the meantime if you could let us know what you have so far I’m sure all the helpers on here would love to help you out, including me. Anything convict and I’m a glutton for punishment. I love them and all their interesting stories.
Luckily they were in Tasmania and Tassie convict records are so very detailed.
I will read all these posts here again and see what we have.

    How exciting
Unfortunately the Mary in the photo does not seem to be related but I will not throw that idea out just yet. I have seen that photo before and I was also drawn to it.
I do not have a lot of information only what you have yourself found, Charles Nye and Mary Fleming being the parents of my gg grandfather. No one spoke of our Tasmania heritage and I am fascinated by it, I do go to tassie once a year so I’d like to find where my ancestors are laid to rest. could he have had two wives? Could our real last name be Nape? I’m so confused. I have heard through family that he was a police officer so I think we have the right Charles..
I really cannot believe I found this post ♥️

Well he wouldnt have been a ‘police officer’ as such but a ‘convict constable’. A trusted convict who was given the job as there was a shortage of proper police. Convict constables were still convicts But with a ticket of leave and put in charge of the other convicts. Hubbies gggrandfather was one also and also in Tasmania.
So happy you found us too. We will get you sorted somehow. With all these Marys it may take a while to find the correct one.
I won’t be around tomorrow but will come back to this on Thursday and do some more detective work in Tassie. Others here might find things too. Im sure they are champing at the bit to help.

I cannot thank you enough, it’s been a very long time coming, I’m searching ancestry and exhausted information on Mary Fleming, I’m now trying Mary Wilson, she has a very long list of criminal activity. Not sure but worth a try.
Hello everybody I look forward to speaking with you all and helping in any way I can. Genealogy is my guilty pastime

Yeah probably didn’t need to say that to you all. My husband says I spend too much time playing around with the past :)
I love it, it’s like being a private investigator

I’m getting there. Still trying to figure out who Mary Fleming is. But it does look like Charles married twice with no apparent death of wife number one...unless of course she took off as there are few years between marriages.

That’s ok. I know you are busy today.
I’m currently checking all convict records on Tasmanian libraries. I’ll let you know if I find anything

    Approx birth date
    Charles Nye 1817
    Constable
    Mary Fleming 1820
Married 1854 Oct 10th Christ Church Longford
Son Charles Nape (should be Nye) birth October 14th 1855
I can see why they thought Nape as Mary signature looks like Nape. This is good, it means my family name is Nye!!!
I know you knew all this but I just wanted to put it all down. I can see I’m going to be very busy haha
