May be asking the impossible

Rootles out resources!
Would love to hear your thoughts on what the top line of these 1795 baptisms says.

possible baptism Mary Miller Mashman (3).jpg

Mary Ail? Initially saw Alberta, but don’t think so.
Mary Millicent? I’m sure it starts with ‘M’ now.

Could the father's name perhaps be Thomas given that the third letter looks more like an 'o' than an 'a'? It looks very similar to an older version of a capital T. Is there another one on the page you can compare it to? Wife's name definitely looks like Eliz.

I wondered that too, although to me, the fourth letter looks rather more like an 'r' than an 'm' or an 's' (if written Thos).

I agree that more letters to compare it with might help - and I'd also want to compare it with the BT, if it's available, plus any transcripts where the transcriber might have been able to view the original page and gently peer into the folds etc. Can you tell us where this baptism was, please?

Thank you everyone. The baptism is at Swanscombe, Kent so I am able to look at the original, on the internet that is.
I am looking for a Mary Miller Mushman or Mashman born c1795. FMP have the transcription as Mary Miller daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth baptised 16 Aug 1795. I could see the Mary and eventually thought the middle name maybe Miller, also I though the father might be Thomas, but couldn't see the date at all. The date on the page before is 2nd Aug, again I think. How on earth they worked out a surname I do not know.

I guess I'll put it in as a maybe.

FreeReg couldn't read all of the middle name, but they have the surname as Mushman:

Thank you Arthur. For some reason I always forget about FreeReg.

Can anyone else see that it says Mushman, cos I sure can't.o_O:confused:

No, but it does seem to end in -man
I was about to say the same - and this was why I wondered if a transcriber might have had access to the original.

FamilySearch have images of the BTs at their Family History Centres, though I'm not 100% sure of the years - most listings seem to include 1795 as part of a range, but I think I also saw one which gave two non-consecutive ranges, with 1795 in the gap between them.

Otherwise, the NW Kent FHS sell transcripts, and I discovered one by someone else, which happens to be somewhere in the WA state library:

Don't know if this helps at all, and you probably already have this information, but a Mary Miller MUSHMAN married John ELLIS on 13 January 1819 at Dartford, Kent. 1861 census of Swanscombe shows John ELLIS living at Birds Row with wife Mary born c1795 at Swanscombe plus son Henry, aged 22, born Swanscombe. The GRO Index shows that Henry's birth was registered in the December qtr 1838, mother's maiden name MARSHMAN. Given that the baptism you originally showed in post 1, on closer inspection, looks like Mary Miller daughter of Tho .. & Eliz .......MAN and using the various transcriptions & census records, it does seem to point to a Mary Miller MUSHMAN being baptised in 1795 at Swanscombe. There are a couple of Family Trees on Ancestry, one of which is a public tree and the other a private tree. Would it be worth your while contacting them to see if they have any additional information?

Thank you Janet. I will try and contact the tree owners on Ancestry. I don't have a sub, but still have my account so not sure if I can, but will give it a go.
