This is in answer to a query made by Joe - Member 801 I think:)

In the 1881 census there is a Catherine living with grandparents William and Mary Jenkin in Lower Llansamlet. Catherine's brother and sister are William R Price and Mary Ann Price. There is no mention of the mother of Catherine.
Apologies if I am stating facts that you already know:(

Thank you Louise, no apologies needed. I have all the census' on Ancestry but I suspect the truth will be much closer to the ground than official records. Perhaps someone in the Llansamlet/Neath area - even connected with the family - might just 'know something', hopefully. Joe

Just in case people stumble across this thread and have not read Joe's introduction, his query is as follows:
I am stuck relatively early at Catherine Giles born 1871 at Llansamlet, Glamorgan because she seems to have been illegitimate. There are indications that a Mr Price may have been her father, and speculation that her mother may been Jane Giles b.1851
in Llansamlet or perhaps Neath. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

:)

Do you have Catherine's birth certificate at all? A copy would be available from the GRO and may be ordered online for £9.25. The reference is:
Catherine GILES, September quarter 1871, Neath registration district, volume 11a, page 547

This would confirm the mother's name.:)

Thanks Sandiep, I have her marriage and am satisfied that she was a daughter of one of Mary Giles nee Leyshon's three daughters. I have ordered her Birth Certificate but do not hope to see her father's name!
PS: Where is Ceredigion please? Is is it one of the 'new' Wales counties? Joe

PS: Where is Ceredigion please?
According to Wikipedia:
The county was created as Cardiganshire in 1282 in the area of the former Kingdom of Ceredigion. The historic county was abolished in 1974 and reconstituted in 1996 as Ceredigion, with largely identical boundaries.

I am most grateful - well done, and thank you. Joe
